Canal History and Historic Sites
At Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site, you can observe three significant construction phases of the Erie Canal. The site also features marked trails for walking, cycling, hiking, horseback riding, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Kayakers and canoeists can use the Yankee Hill Kayak Launch or the Aqueduct Picnic Area Boat Launch there. This makes it possible to combine historical impressions with activities on the water and on land.
The Fort Plain Museum dedicates its exhibitions to the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The grounds include a park of approximately 75 acres. Fort Klock Historic Restoration is designated as a National Historic Landmark and includes a Dutch barn from the 1790s, a blacksmith shop and an 1825 schoolhouse. Other historical connections are shown by the 1747 Nellis Tavern, Homestead and Store, which reflects the culture of the Palatine Germans, as well as the Village of Fort Plain: The fort after which it was named was an important military stronghold during the American Revolutionary War.
In Stone Arabia, two 18th-century churches stand side by side. Colonel Brown’s Cemetery is an 18th-century burial site for Colonel Brown and others who died in the Battle of Stone Arabia during the American Revolutionary War. The National Shrine of Kateri Tekakwitha includes a rustic chapel in an 18th-century Dutch barn and displays artifacts from the only fully excavated Mohawk village of its time.
River, Bike Trails and Short Nature Experiences
The Mohawk River runs through all of Montgomery County and offers opportunities for recreation. Approximately 15 miles of multi-use trails run through the county. It also contains a section of the Mohawk-Hudson Bikeway, a 60-mile trail along the Erie Canal and the Mohawk River between St. Johnsville and Waterford. Many sections were created along the former route of the Erie Canal’s 19th-century towpath. The Erie Canalway Trail is suitable for hiking, cycling, inline skating and cross-country skiing.
For a manageable walk, the well-maintained, approximately one-mile loop trail in Thomas H. Burbine Memorial Forest is a good option. The site features trail signs and a 30-foot bridge over the pond overflow. The same forest is also home to Montgomery County’s first disc golf course. Another distinctive destination is the Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook, which spans the Mohawk River for 511 feet between the northern and southern banks. At both ends, there are twelve stopping points featuring symbols and explanatory texts about the valley’s history.
Excursions with Special Character
Fonda Speedway has represented stock car racing since 1953. Saturday evening races take place there on a half-mile dirt track; the Fonda 200 has created memories for fans and brought fame to its winners since 1955. Those looking for a quieter, agriculture-focused excursion can take free tours by appointment at Alpacas at Clear View Farm. Among other things, the farm produces alpaca fiber and yarn, clothing made from alpaca fiber, honey, beeswax candles and beeswax lotion.
In summer and autumn, Sand Flats Orchard offers walks through the orchard as well as the opportunity to hand-pick ingredients. The Amsterdam Saturday Farmers/Crafters Market offers regional products, food and goods from craftspeople. Kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddleboards can be used without a permit on the Mohawk River or Schoharie Creek. The Kayak-a-thon is an all-day event along the Mohawk River, attended by more than 50 kayakers and canoeists.
