Water, Hot Springs and Trails for Different Kinds of Days
Elephant Butte Lake State Park is an important destination for travelers who want to spend time by the water. The park can accommodate watercraft of various types and sizes, including kayaks, jet skis, pontoons, sailboats, ski boats, cruisers and houseboats. There is also a visitor center near the main entrance. In the Damsite Recreation Area, a historic district commemorates the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps.
The hot springs of Truth or Consequences reveal another side of the region. They produce water with temperatures ranging from 98 to 115 degrees and trace elements from 38 different minerals. The therapeutic effects of the area’s hot springs have attracted people since before the beginning of written records.
Hiking Between Lakeshore Landscapes and Mountain Forests
The Paseo del Rio Trail passes through a cottonwood forest, wetlands, ponds and riparian habitats. Parking is available at the trailhead, and the trail is easily accessible from downtown Truth or Consequences. This makes it possible to begin a day with a nature outing without committing to a long drive.
Those seeking larger expanses of landscape can access the trail systems of the Gila National Forest from Sierra County. Along the access routes are ponderosa pine forests, mixed-conifer mountains, rocky canyons, wilderness ridges and expansive viewpoints. The Point-of-Rocks Trail, by contrast, offers a 0.5-mile loop to a rock outcrop. The trail, managed by the Bureau of Land Management, is well marked, bilingual and self-guided; it is open year-round during daylight hours.
Scenic Roads and History Along the Way
The Geronimo Trail National Scenic Byway lies in Sierra County and leads from mountain forests through dry deserts and shrub-covered hills, passing two of New Mexico’s largest lakes. Its visitor center is located at 523 N. Broadway between Clancy and Daniels in downtown Truth or Consequences. For a longer drive on paved roads, the 48-mile Lake Valley Back Country Byway is another option. It runs through ranching and mining country and passes the ruins of Lake Valley.
History also appears at individual sites. Point of Rocks was a landmark for travelers on El Camino Real. Percha Dam is a diversion structure and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. About 27 original buildings still stand in Chloride, including the Pioneer Store, which now serves as a museum. Main Street is lined with buildings featuring false-front facades and adobe construction.
Museums, Art and Unique Excursions
The Geronimo Springs Museum houses the largest collection of prehistoric pottery in Sierra County, New Mexico. Monthly lectures cover paleontology, archaeology, gemstones and minerals, as well as the history of Sierra County. In the Historic Bathhouse District, you can see buildings in Territorial, Pueblo Revival and early-20th-century styles. The district is compact and pedestrian-friendly.
The monthly Truth or Consequences Art Hop opens participating shops, galleries and studios to the public. It takes place on the second Saturday of every month from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Another unusual activity is the public access tours of Spaceport America. Final Frontier Tours offers these tours; they depart from Truth or Consequences on Saturdays at 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Advance reservations are required, and the tours may be modified or canceled due to mission control requirements.
