Morris County reveals a diverse side of New Jersey: Gentle hills, broad valleys and sparkling lakes lie about 30 miles northwest of New York City. In addition, there are extensive hiking areas, museums, historic sites and places where natural and cultural history can be experienced first-hand. When choosing a vacation rental or vacation home, the key question is therefore whether you want to focus your trip more on trails and landscapes, on history or on a variety of excursions.

Hiking Trails, Lakes and Impressive Landscapes

Jockey Hollow is a focal point for active days. The area offers more than 20 miles of hiking trails. The Yellow Trail is described as a 2.25-mile out-and-back route, while the Blue Trail runs for more than three miles as a loop. The different trail lengths help you plan an excursion without having to commit to just one type of route.

At Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area, more than 1,600 acres await you with challenging trails, fields, forests, rock outcrops and wetlands. Glacial erratics include Bear Rock, Tripod Rock and Whale Head Rock. The Morris County park system also offers numerous hiking, cycling, wildflower and nature trails across more than 20,000 acres. Anyone who enjoys combining different landscape impressions can include these areas as separate excursion destinations in their travel plans.

Swimming and boating are among the activities available at Sunrise Lake in Lewis Morris County Park. In summer, there is also an inflatable water obstacle course, among other attractions. This creates a different idea for a day out than a stay among woodland trails and rock formations. Which vacation rental is suitable as a base therefore also depends on whether water activities, walks or nature-focused discoveries are the priority.

Discover American History and Culture

Morristown National Historical Park commemorates the winter encampments of George Washington and the Continental Army from December 1779 to June 1780. The heritage of the American Revolutionary War is preserved there; no entrance fee is charged at the park. Craftsman Farms is home to the 1911 Main Log House, the former residence of Gustav Stickley. The site is designated as a National Historic Landmark.

Historic Speedwell and the Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum offer further historical perspectives. Historic Speedwell preserves the cotton mill where Alfred Vail completed the telegraph. Visitors can see a working water wheel there. The Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum is located in a former lockkeeper's house on the Morris Canal and conveys the history of New Jersey's largest lake.

Museums and historic landscapes also add to the picture. The Morris Museum presents permanent and temporary exhibitions. Its collections include, among other things, fine art, anthropology, geology, decorative arts, history and the natural sciences. The Bickford Theatre offers performing arts programs for all age groups. At the Bamboo Brook Outdoor Education Center, visitors can learn about the work of Martha Brookes Hutcheson, one of America's first landscape architects. Fosterfields is designated as New Jersey's first living historical farm; its demonstrations include seasonal planting, farming, harvesting and milking.

Put Together Excursions Based on Your Interests

For a stay with varied interests, you can combine nature, history and horticultural themes. The Frelinghuysen Arboretum features extensive collections of trees and shrubs as well as display gardens with plants adapted to the soils and climate of northern New Jersey. The Hagarty Education Center offers courses, special horticultural events, a reference library and a visitor information area. Valley Shepherd Creamery gives visitors an insight into everyday life at a working sheep dairy.

When arriving and choosing where to stay, several transportation connections are available: New Jersey Transit transports commuters in Morris County every day. In addition, the Central Railroad of New Jersey, the Morristown & Erie Railroad and the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railroad cross the county. Bus connections link Morris County's 39 municipalities with the metropolitan region. The major Interstate Highways 80, 10, 46, 287 and 280 connect numerous communities in the county.

When searching for a vacation rental, consider which combination of landscapes, culture and water activities suits your trip. For a quieter, nature-focused itinerary, trails, lakes and the arboretum can take center stage; those more interested in history can prioritize the historic sites and museums. You can also include Ledgewood as another destination in your search.
