Discover Carroll: Lakes, Culture, and Historic Train Rides
Accommodation in Carroll
Carroll and Carroll County combine impressive landscapes with an unusually wide range of opportunities for cultural and exploration days. Families can choose between lakes, historic estates, museums, walking trails, and nostalgic train rides. When searching for a vacation rental or holiday home, it is therefore worthwhile to first determine which experiences you want: Should the trip focus on water and nature, American history, or excursions on historic railway lines?
Lakes, Trails, and Special Landscapes
One-quarter of Carroll County lies within the White Mountain National Forest. Among the notable natural destinations is White Lake State Park on the shore of White Lake, which is considered a typical glacial lake. A well-maintained footpath leads around the lake. Trout fishing is also possible in the park. Echo Lake State Park complements this offering with opportunities for swimming and picnicking. Several hiking trails start there, including a scenic path around the lake.
There are also specific points of interest for short excursions. A one-mile-long road leads to the summit of the 700-foot-high Cathedral Ledge. If you would like to visit Wentworth State Park, you can make a reservation in advance because parking is limited. Pets are not allowed there. The Governor Wentworth Historic Site is open for recreational purposes at all times. These differing conditions may play a role in planning and in choosing suitable accommodation.
Historic Estates and Museums
Carroll County is particularly well suited to travelers who want to combine landscapes with history. The Lucknow Estate covered 6,300 acres; the Lucknow Estate is also designated a National Historic Landmark. Castle in the Clouds offers tours of the historic Lucknow Mansion as well as its lawns and gardens. The Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm is a historic site and working farm with exhibits, gardens, and walking paths.
The Wright Museum focuses on the history of Americans during World War II. The nonprofit educational institution honors their contributions and lasting legacy. A rotating exhibition from the vehicle collection displays tanks, half-tracks, Jeeps, and motorcycles. Other exhibits illustrate how ordinary Americans lived during World War II through toys, posters, furnishings, and other everyday objects. The Loon Center has a gift shop.
Historic Train Rides and Trails
The Conway Scenic Railroad offers various ways to experience the region. The Valley Train provides an authentic, one-hour journey on a historic branch line. A 4- to 4.5-hour round trip passes through Crawford Notch. The classic North Conway Station is also part of the region's railway history. The Conway Branch is a 21-mile-long trail that extends from Route 28 in Ossipee to West Main Street in Conway. The Wolfeboro Branch Recreational Rail Trail begins in downtown Wolfeboro, opposite Lake Winnipesaukee's Back Bay.
For further travel planning, you can consider individual places and their respective highlights separately: Wolfeboro, Bartlett, Moultonboro, Center Harbor, Conway, Tamworth, Jackson, North Conway, Ossipee, Hart's Location, Tuftonboro and Wakefield. This allows you to align your accommodation search with the experiences that offer the greatest value for your trip.
