Murray: Discover Lakes, Trails, and History
Accommodation in Murray
Murray combines nature experiences, regional history, and vibrant traditions to create a diverse travel destination. Those looking for a vacation rental can tailor their stay to different interests: short loops around lakes, historical collections, events with a local character, or a round of golf. This mix makes planning especially interesting, because not every day of the vacation has to follow the same rhythm.
Lakes, Islands, and Trails for Different Day Plans
The Loon Island Trail offers an accessible one-mile loop trail with a gravel surface. The route crosses a causeway to one of five natural islands in Lake Shetek. Various plants and birds can be seen along the trail. At 1.5 miles, the Webster Island Trail is somewhat longer and runs through prairies and along the shore of Webster Marsh. Those who want to include another short trail can find the 1.2-mile Lake Elsie Walking Trail in Slayton.
The lakes themselves also shape the selection of possible vacation experiences. Seven Mile Lake Park has a swimming beach, camping options, and picnic areas. The Lime Lake Park Campground is located on Lime Lake and provides access to fishing around the causeway. The six-mile paved section of the Casey Jones State Trail between Lake Shetek State Park and Currie connects tallgrass prairie, wooded ravines, and Lake Shetek. Horses are not permitted on this section. The different routes and landscapes therefore provide useful guidance for personal day planning, without every outing having to feel the same.
History to See and Experience
The Murray County Historical Museum displays more than 10,000 artifacts and presents the history of the region from the Paleo-Indian era to the present day. The complex includes four buildings or structures. The research archive and library contain 25,000 family records, county atlases, books on regional history, and county documents. For visitors who want to explore the area's past in greater depth, this focus offers a different perspective on Murray.
At End-O-Line Railroad Park & Museum, tours last 45 to 60 minutes. Outside the regular building hours, the park grounds remain open daily during daylight hours. The Dinehart Holt Historic House Museum, built in 1891, offers tours during business hours. The Dinehart-Holt House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 because of its local significance, its connection with Christopher and Flora Dinehart, and its architecture. It combines features of the Queen Anne style with elements of the Stick Style. Also part of the area's railroad history is the hand-operated Currie Railroad Turntable, which was built in 1901 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
Traditions, Events, and Regional Specialties
The Murray County Fair has been held annually since 1912, with two exceptions. Pulled pork, pork burgers, and Hog Troughs are among the fair's culinary traditions; malts prepared by the Murray County Dairy Association are also associated with the event. The annual Wood Duck Festival takes place in Fulda in June. The program includes picnics, a parade, a carnival, and musical and talent performances in the park. Fulda is known as the “Home of the Wood Duck” because of the numerous colorful wood ducks that pass through the region.
