Discover Cottonwood County
Accommodation in Cottonwood County
Cottonwood County combines impressive cultural history with wide-open prairie, parks, and trails for active outings. The Jeffers Petroglyphs are particularly distinctive: around 5,000 sacred rock carvings created by the ancestors of today’s Native Americans are located there. The site is considered one of the world’s oldest continuously used sacred sites. For travel planning, this means that anyone looking for a vacation rental or holiday home in the county can focus on a mix of historical discoveries and nature experiences.
Sacred Rock Carvings and Wide-Open Prairie
At Jeffers Petroglyphs, trails lead through the original prairie. More than 250 species of grasses, wildflowers, and lichens shape this landscape. The rock outcrop is part of the 23-mile-long Red Rock Ridge, which extends through Cottonwood County. This creates a destination where not only the carvings themselves but also the surrounding area play an important role. Free parking for cars and buses is available on site.
Red Rock Falls County Park also combines scenery and movement. Trails run along Sioux quartzite outcrops and lead to a 30-foot waterfall cascading over the rocks. Anyone who enjoys alternating between short nature stops and more extensive sightseeing on a trip will find different opportunities in the county to make the day varied.
History in Parks, Museums, and Historic Buildings
Mountain Park was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 4, 1973. The undeveloped hilltop of the former island in the park is especially suitable for observing wildlife and numerous bird species. South Dutch Charley Park was home to Charley Zierke, who is described as the first settler of Cottonwood County. A stone house built on site in 1878 by Pat Conlin from the remains of an unfinished gristmill is also preserved there, although it is now deteriorating.
At the Cottonwood County Historical Museum, the exhibition hall covers the county’s history from the presence of Native Americans through life in the 1940s. The Remick Gallery highlights works by local artists. For visitors who want to explore their family history in greater depth, the museum also offers an expanded research library for genealogical research. In Westbrook stands the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Omaha Depot, a historic transportation building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Westbrook Depot was built in the summer of 1900. At the Minnesota Hall of Fame Telephone Museum in Heritage Village, visitors can trace the development of telegraphy and telephony through the history of local telecommunications.
Trails, Water, and Regional Destinations
The Mountain Lake Trail was created for hiking and cycling and runs along the lake’s eastern and northern shores. Sara Park includes wooded areas, a section of prairie grassland, and a shoreline along Lake Augusta. The Des Moines River is a designated canoe route; in Windom, there are three access points to the river. Anyone wishing to focus on this aspect can pay particular attention when choosing accommodation to whether the desired trip should be shaped more by walks, cycling, canoeing, or culture.
Another option is the 40-acre Talcot Lake County Park on Highway 62 between Windom and Fulda. The park is located in Cottonwood County and offers an opportunity to experience the wildlife and natural beauty of Southbrook, the county’s southwesternmost township. For orientation within the county, you can also include Windom in your further travel plans.
Choose Accommodation to Match Your Travel Theme
Cottonwood County is suited to a trip in which every day can have a different character: sacred rock carvings and historical sites, trails through prairie and parks, or outings on the water. The Mountain Lake Pow Wow adds a long-standing tradition to the cultural side of the destination. When looking for a vacation rental or holiday home, it therefore makes sense to define your own priorities first. Anyone who wants to get to know as many cultural sites as possible will plan differently from travelers who primarily want to spend their days observing nature, hiking, or cycling.
