Douglas County combines diverse landscapes with an unusually varied cultural history. Nine county parks, trails through open flatland and wooded hills, as well as museums in Alexandria, make the region appealing to travelers who want to combine nature experiences with exploration. When choosing a vacation rental, you can therefore consider whether your trip should focus more on parks and trails, museums or historic sites.

Nature and Trails for Different Vacation Days

The Douglas County park system comprises nine county parks. They are open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., providing a clear time frame for planning outdoor stays. Lake Le Homme Dieu Beach offers a special connection to the water: The beach is accessible from the Central Lakes Bike Trail. Those looking for accommodation for a trip with varied interests can take this access point into account alongside the region’s other natural and cultural attractions.

In Lake Carlos State Park, the Hidden Lake Trail leads through the forest. Wildflowers, birds and a bald eagle nest can be seen along the way. The Maple-Basswood Trail is a 1.1-mile, one-way interpretive trail. The two trails offer different experiences: One combines forest scenery with nature observation, while the other presents its surroundings as a clearly defined interpretive trail. This is helpful if you want to shape your vacation days around different ways of enjoying the outdoors without approaching every experience in the same way.

Snowmobile Trails Through Two Landscapes

The Douglas Area Trails Association maintains a 368-mile snowmobile trail network in Douglas County. It passes through the Hardwood Hills and River Prairie landscape regions in west-central Minnesota. Open, flat areas alternate with heavily wooded, hilly terrain. The DATA snowmobile trails connect every community in Douglas County. Kensington Rune Stone Park is located along the DATA Snowmobile Trail and can therefore be considered a separate historic stop within this trail network.

Museums and Historic Sites

The Runestone Museum displays Ojibwe and Dakota artifacts from the Dr. Oliver Collection, including ceremonial pipes and beadwork. In summer, the museum’s offerings also include indoor exhibits and nine historic buildings outdoors. A distinctive addition is the 40-foot-long “Snorri.” Its design is based on an archaeological find in Denmark.

Kensington Rune Stone Park includes the historic Ohman farmyard and the site where the Rune Stone was found. The Legacy of the Lakes Museum in Alexandria focuses on classic boats, fishing history and lake traditions. Permanent exhibits include “Grand Hotels & Resorts,” “Fishing Gallery,” “Alexandria Boat Works” and “Fiberglassics.” Families and other travel groups can thus choose between days in nature, regional history and exhibits with a strong connection to lakes and water.

Places for Further Orientation

For direct destinations in your regional planning, you can also include Alexandria and Millerville. Alexandria is represented by the Legacy of the Lakes Museum, with its boats, fishing and lake traditions; Millerville offers another place to consider when searching for suitable accommodation in Douglas County. This allows you to tailor your travel plans to your own interests without limiting nature, history and regional places to a single vacation theme.
