Discover Ogemaw County: Nature, Water, and History
Accommodation in Ogemaw County
Ogemaw County combines diverse nature experiences with local history and water-based activities. The 15-mile Ogemaw Hills Pathway forms a scenic loop through the Au Sable State Forest. Those who enjoy an active trip can use the same trail for cross-country skiing in winter: All 15 miles are groomed for this purpose during the winter months. The entire route is also open to mountain biking.
Trails, Lakes, and the Rifle River
There are two starting points available for planning activities around the Ogemaw Hills Pathway. One is near the intersection of East Clear Lake and North Fairview Road, and the other is near Sage Lake and Stoney Ridge Road. These two clearly designated starting areas help you determine the preferred focus of your outing in advance without limiting your trip to just one season.
The Rifle River Recreation Area also places a clear emphasis on water and nature. Grebe Lake has an accessible fishing pier. The area also has several boat access points as well as carry-in boat launches along the Rifle River. Paddling is popular on the Rifle River and on the park's numerous lakes, which are intended for leisurely boating. The Rifle River itself originates in Devoe Lake within the Rifle River Recreation Area and offers opportunities for canoeing, tubing, fishing, and camping in Ogemaw County.
Another access point to the water is located at the Ambrose Lake State Forest Campground. There is carry-in access for paddling on the campground's northwest shore and at several campsites. When looking for a vacation rental or vacation home, it therefore makes sense to first decide whether your trip will focus primarily on the loop trail, cross-country skiing, cycling, or experiences along the river and lake.
Encounters with Nature and Experiences for Children
Ogemaw Nature Park offers nature and history programs for children and adults. A close encounter with Michigan white-tailed deer is one of its special experiences. The park's history began in the 1920s as a sanctuary for wild deer. Admission is free; there is also a picnic area with grills and a pavilion.
Families traveling with children can plan to take part in Withey School's craft activities during the festival week. At the General Store, woodcarvers and other craftspeople demonstrate their work during this festival week. The Pioneer Encampment showcases pioneer skills such as cooking, daily chores, and axe throwing. The Antique Village portrays pioneer life in Ogemaw County as a living history experience. The Withey School exhibit includes period school desks and teaching materials.
History, Local Traditions, and Events
The Ogemaw County Historical Museum preserves the history of the county and its families. Exhibits include wedding attire, “Buttons and Bows,” a trophy room, and a military room. The museum also offers genealogical and historical research resources for the region. As a historic site, Ogemaw Springs commemorates the county's oldest village. The settlement began there in 1872 in connection with the Lansing and Saginaw Railroad.
Local history is also reflected in special events. The Ogemaw County Fair takes place every August and includes rides, fair food, the Antique Village, and agricultural competitions. The Pioneer Power Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Show takes place annually in West Branch and focuses on historic agricultural machinery. The Antique Snowmobile Festival features exhibits and demonstrations of antique and historic snowmobiles as well as rides, races, and competitions.
In addition, two loop routes with five different sections run through the Ogemaw County Color Tour. The Sunrise Side Wine and Hops Trail offers tastings of locally produced wine at Modern Craft Winery and Rose Valley Winery. A self-guided tour of barn art, the 18-hole West Branch Disc Golf Course along Rifle Creek, and the Rifle Creek Archery Park with indoor and outdoor areas add to the selection. A “Park Pass” is required for the indoor area of the Archery Park, while the outdoor area is open to the public.
This allows you to choose accommodations that suit your preferred travel rhythm: You can focus on trails and winter activities, water experiences, nature observation, family activities, or history and local events. Ogemaw County offers several clearly distinct themes, so you do not have to limit yourself to just one type of vacation.
