Manistee County combines sandy shores on Lake Michigan with river trails, dune landscapes, and cultural attractions. The options range from short paved paths to longer hikes and winter cross-country ski trails. The scenery varies, too: sometimes the focus is on views over the water; at other times, it is on rivers, local history, or agricultural experiences. These differences can help you plan outings and search for a vacation rental based on the experiences you want to shape your trip.

Dunes and Trails on Lake Michigan

Manistee County’s shoreline is 25 miles long and sandy. Portage Point Beach lies where Portage Lake meets Lake Michigan and is surrounded by gently rolling dunes. At Orchard Beach State Park, the grounds sit on a 100-foot bluff above the lake, with more than 3.5 miles of trails. A historic structure in the park weighs 850 tons and has been restored and relocated. Important for planning: The beach at Orchard Beach State Park is currently inaccessible from the park due to erosion. Check conditions before your visit, as shoreline conditions can change.

Arcadia Dunes in the C.S. Mott Nature Preserve offers a different kind of view: an accessible, non-motorized, paved 0.5-mile trail leads to a lookout on a dune above Lake Michigan. The hiking and mountain biking trails also range from beginner routes to more challenging ones. The Dry Hill Trail at Arcadia Dunes is a 10-mile mountain biking loop. This means you can choose between a short walk to the lookout and longer athletic routes, without every outing requiring the same level of challenge.

River Trails, Paddling, and Time on the Water

The Manistee River Trail is a system of trails more than 11 miles long along the high banks of the Big Manistee River between Tippy Dam and Hodenpyle Dam. The trail includes the Little Mac Suspension Bridge, a 245-foot-long footbridge. A 23-mile loop follows the Manistee River Trail and the North Country Trail. In the city of Manistee, the 1.75-mile southern Riverwalk follows the Big Manistee River through downtown. The different trail lengths give you a range of ways to include time by the river in your day.

There are different options on the water, too. Manistee County offers 270 miles of rivers suitable for paddling. The section of the Big Manistee River within the county is rated easy to moderate for paddlers. The stretch of river from Hodenpyl Dam to Red Bridge is used for tubing; river conditions can vary. Immediately below Tippy Dam, visitors fish for salmon and steelhead in the tailwaters. Conditions on the river can change here, too, and regulations may vary. The City of Manistee operates three boat launches; conditions and fees may change.

Culture and Regional Discoveries

Exhibits at the Manistee County Historical Museum include the Lyman Drug Store, historic living spaces, Victorian antiques, and photographs. The S.S. City of Milwaukee is a National Historic Landmark and a traditional railroad car ferry in the North U.S. 31 corridor in Manistee. The Ramsdell has been a cultural center in Manistee since 1903 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Tippy Dam was completed in 1918. These sites showcase different facets of history, from collections and heritage to a structure with a specific completion date.

The Cultural Corridor at Little River Casino Resort presents the history of the Anishinaabe, or Ottawa, Indian tribe. If you would also like to discover local products and agriculture, agritourism in the county includes U-pick farms, farmers markets, and tasting locations at nearly 20 sites. U-pick offerings are seasonal. The Manistee County tourism office also offers 15 self-guided tours; check which ones are available before your trip.

Winter Routes and Choosing Your Vacation Rental

There are several distinct options for winter days: Manistee County has more than 150 miles of groomed and marked snowmobile trails, whose conditions vary seasonally. The Big-M Recreation Area has 18 miles of groomed classic cross-country ski trails. The Outer Loop is a 17-mile groomed route for fat biking; winter grooming is seasonal. The trail network at Big-M Recreation Area is also connected to the North Country Trail system. This makes it easy to choose between classic cross-country skiing, a fat-bike loop, and snowmobile trails based on the activity you have in mind.

When searching for a vacation rental, you can first consider which experiences you want at the heart of your trip: river trails and paddling, dunes and shorelines, cultural discoveries, or winter routes. Choose your accommodation based on these priorities and the outings you have planned. This makes choosing the right location part of your trip planning, rather than trying to fit every offering into a single itinerary.
