Mecosta County: Between Lakes, River Trails, and History
Accommodation in Mecosta County
Mecosta County combines more than 100 lakes, rivers, and streams with extensive trails, riverbanks, and surprisingly diverse cultural sites. Those looking for a vacation rental or vacation home for varied days away can choose between water-based experiences, outdoor activities, and regional history here. Mecosta County’s location at the junction of US-131 and M-20 also makes it an easy stopover along the route between Grand Rapids and Traverse City.
Lakes, Rivers, and Trails for Active Days
The Muskegon River flows directly through downtown Big Rapids. Four fishing platforms are located along the paved Big Rapids Riverwalk; in winter, the trail can be used for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. This allows you to plan your stay differently depending on the season, without having to commit to just one activity.
The lake landscape also offers a variety of options. Brower Park has 1,000 feet of sandy beach. School Section Lake Veteran's Park features a large sandy beach for swimming as well as canoe, kayak, stand-up paddleboard, and pedal boat rentals. An original one-room schoolhouse is also located there. At Paris Park, kayaking and canoeing are possible from the launch site on the Muskegon River. Merrill-Gorrel Park borders Merrill Lake and Gorrel Lake; each lake has its own boat launch.
Haymarsh Lake is of interest to anglers. The lake covers 375 acres and contains populations of northern pike, largemouth bass, crappie, perch, bluegill, and pumpkinseed. Another distinctive landscape feature is the Martiny Chain of Lakes near Tubbs Lake, with eight lakes connected by a canal system. Tubbs Lake Campground is located in the DNR-managed Martiny Lake State Game Area, which covers 7,660 acres. Tubbs Lake Campground operates on a “first come, first served” basis; reservations are not possible.
Hiking, Cycling, and Winter Trails
The 200-acre White Pine Valley Recreation Area features a well-developed, non-motorized trail network for hiking, cycling, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. The Dragon Trail offers opportunities primarily for hiking, running, and mountain biking. Michigan's Dragon at Hardy Dam is fully completed and open as a 45-mile linear county park. Those looking for accommodations can therefore consider whether a vacation focused on forest trails, cycling tours, water sports, or peaceful days by the lakes is a better fit for their preferred location.
When planning a visit to Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park in Paris, note a current restriction: A section between the Mecosta County Parks office and 207th Avenue is closed due to construction. A signed detour is in place. The White Pine Trail is 92 miles long overall and runs directly through Paris Park.
Museums and Regional History
The Jim Crow Museum houses more than 9,000 artifacts; most of the objects were created between the 1870s and the 1960s. The museum uses objects of intolerance to teach tolerance and promote a more equitable society. The Mecosta County Historical Museum is located in the former home of lumber entrepreneur Fitch Phelps and features exhibits on the history of Mecosta County and the history of the lumber industry.
Paris also combines nature and the past. The Paris Fish Hatchery opened in 1881 and was the second-oldest fish hatchery in the state. Paris Park is located at the site of the former Paris State Fish Hatchery. For travel planning, this creates an interesting blend of river, trail, and historic atmosphere, without requiring culture and nature to be considered separately.
Local Impressions and Further Orientation
From May through October, the seasonal Big Rapids Farmers' Market offers produce, plants, and baked goods. In summer, the Barryton Farmers Market offers regional produce and handmade goods weekly in Barryton’s Central Park; the season runs from June through October. Such markets can complement a vacation day focused not on the next long trail, but on regional products and a slower pace.
For further orientation, you can also visit Big Rapids and Remus. When searching for a vacation rental in Mecosta County, your preferred type of trip is especially helpful in making a selection: access to water, forest trails, river landscapes, culture, or a combination of several interests. This keeps your accommodation search closely connected to the experiences you want to shape your stay.
