Emmet combines expansive waterfront landscapes, dune trails, and historic sites into a destination with many different facets. Those looking for a vacation rental or holiday home can make their preferred mix of beach, nature, culture, and activities the starting point for choosing a location. Along Lake Michigan, specific landscape experiences are just as central as museums, lighthouses, and reminders of the region’s history.

Beach, Dunes, and Trails along Lake Michigan

Petoskey State Park offers one mile of sandy beach on Lake Michigan and has two campgrounds. For a hike through the dunes, visitors can choose between the approximately 0.8-kilometer Old Baldy Trail, a loop to the summit of Old Baldy Dune, and the approximately 1.6-kilometer Portage Trail. The latter is an out-and-back hike through a wooded dune area. This makes it possible to include trails of different lengths in the day’s plans without structuring the entire stay around a single activity.

The 26-mile paved Little Traverse Wheelway offers another perspective on the waterfront landscape. The trail passes the entrance to Petoskey State Park and connects Charlevoix with Harbor Springs. Wilderness State Park adds 26 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and more than 20 miles of hiking trails. A boat launch at Big Stone Bay provides access to Lake Michigan. On the south side of Waugoshance Point, you can fish for smallmouth bass or fly-fish for carp.

Nature Experiences and Special Discoveries

Thorne Swift Nature Preserve offers three easy hiking and cross-country skiing trails. They lead through 30 hectares of wetlands and higher-elevation landscapes to a pond and the beach. This allows a stay to be organized around both the preferred pace and the season. The greater Petoskey Area also has well-used and well-maintained snowmobile trails; official trails run through Emmet and Charlevoix Counties. This does not guarantee reliable snow cover, but the trails are part of the region’s documented winter profile.

At Oden State Fish Hatchery, next to the visitor center, there is a reconstructed Wolverine train vehicle from the years 1914 to 1935. Oden Fish Hatchery also has two free Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations that are available year-round. For travelers with an electric car, this provides a specific point of reference when planning a route.

History along Roads and Shorelines

Michilimackinac State Park extends across Cheboygan and Emmet Counties and is located along the shore of the Straits of Mackinac. The park provides access to the shore of Lake Huron. It is home to Colonial Michilimackinac, one of the most significant 18th-century fur-trading posts. The historic McGulpin Point Lighthouse also tells a story of shipping: From 1869 to 1906, the lighthouse protected ships in the Straits of Mackinac from storms, fog, and rocks. The site includes 336 feet of shoreline along the Straits of Mackinac.

The Little Traverse History Museum presents exhibitions about Ernest Hemingway’s life in Michigan, rare Odawa artifacts, and the history of the Little Traverse Bay region. It is located in a restored Pere Marquette railway station on the Petoskey waterfront. Those who want to combine days in nature with cultural visits will find a different focus here than at the beach, dunes, or hiking trails.

The Right Base for Your Trip

When looking for a vacation rental or holiday home, it is worth deciding first on the desired rhythm of your vacation. For water and landscape experiences, sandy beaches, shoreline, dunes, and paved trails take center stage. Those with a stronger interest in history can include the sites around Colonial Michilimackinac, McGulpin Point Lighthouse, and the Little Traverse History Museum in their plans. For an active trip, the hiking trails, Little Traverse Wheelway, fishing spots, or—depending on the season—cross-country skiing and snowmobile trails can serve as points of reference.

Getting There and Nearby Places

Pellston Regional Airport offers daily Delta flights to Detroit Metro Airport. Rental cars and shuttle services are available locally. For further orientation, you can also include Petoskey, Pellston, Harbor Springs, and Alanson as separate places in your travel plans.
