Alger County combines the landscape of Lake Superior with an unusual variety of hiking trails, waterfalls, beaches, and historic sites. The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on the southeastern shore of Lake Superior is particularly distinctive. Those planning a trip can choose between scenic coastal trails, short nature experiences, longer hikes, and excursions with a cultural focus.

Pictured Rocks: Cliffs, Beaches, and Waterfalls

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore covers approximately 73,236 acres. The landscape includes multicolored sandstone cliffs, long beaches, sand dunes, waterfalls, inland lakes, wetlands, and deciduous and coniferous forests. The cliffs are 50 to 200 feet high and extend along 15 miles of shoreline. Their colors and patterns, as well as the mineral deposits on the rocks, gave the area its name.

For a shorter hike, the Chapel Falls Loop leads 2.5 miles to a 60-foot waterfall. The Sable Falls Trail is a 0.4-mile loop; 168 steps lead to the base of the falls and then to a beach on Lake Superior. Those looking for a longer route can choose the Chapel Loop. It passes through hardwood forests and follows more than four miles of shoreline. The North Country National Scenic Trail runs for up to 42 miles through the Lakeshore.

Different Trails for Planning Your Day

Miners Castle is the only cliff area in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore accessible by vehicle. The two upper viewing areas are wheelchair accessible and only a short distance from the parking lot. Lake Superior Overlook Beach also has a wheelchair-accessible viewing platform overlooking the lake. The beach has a day-use parking lot and a short staircase leading to the shore.

Other destinations combine physical activity with nature observation. The Munising Falls Trail is an 800-foot-long, paved, one-way path leading to a 50-foot waterfall. Due to storm damage from April 2025, this trail is temporarily closed. Laughing Whitefish Falls can be reached via a moderately difficult, half-mile hike through a beech-maple forest. Laughing Whitefish Falls State Park also offers environmental education, birdwatching, and wildlife viewing.

Lighthouse, Logging, and the Underwater World

The Au Sable Light Station was built in 1874. A 1.5-mile footpath leads there from the Hurricane River Campground. Guided climbs explain the lighthouse’s history and function, pass through the assistant keeper’s quarters, and include climbing 98 steps to the top. On the beach below the trail, exposed remains of shipwrecks lie along the shoreline.

The Bay Furnace Historic Site and Interpretive Trail also has its own focus. A short, accessible one-eighth-mile loop leads around stabilized ruins of a blast furnace where pig iron was produced between 1870 and 1877. At Log Slide, a short footpath passes historic logging equipment and offers views of the Grand Sable Dunes. For diving enthusiasts, the Alger Underwater Preserve offers sea caves, intact shipwrecks, and underwater interpretive trails. In Murray Bay, a 145-foot-long schooner lies in 30 feet of water. A Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tour operates from Munising and shows, among other things, the 71-foot-long tugboat Steven M. Selvick.

Grand Island and Choosing Your Accommodation

Grand Island is a 13,500-acre extension of the Hiawatha National Forest and has a rich natural and cultural history. The island is accessible by passenger ferry from Grand Island Landing on the mainland. There, visitors can take a two-and-a-half- to three-hour narrated bus tour with nine stops, follow a 20-mile main mountain biking route, or take a short path to the Grand Island Harbor Front Range Light, which leads to the Lake Superior shoreline.

When searching for a vacation rental in Alger County, it is therefore worthwhile to determine your planned priorities first. The main road through Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is Alger County Road H-58. Every vehicle entering the Lakeshore requires a Pictured Rocks Pass or an America the Beautiful federal pass. Camping is permitted only with a reservation and exclusively at designated sites. If local offerings are important, the Farmers’ & Artisans’ Market in Munising offers fresh produce, baked goods, meat, and crafts weekly from mid-June through mid-October. This allows you to combine nature, history, water-based experiences, and local impressions in a way that suits your trip planning.
