Ingham offers an unusually wide range of ways to combine water, nature, family experiences and history. Burchfield Park covers 540 acres with forests, trails and a beach and is the largest park in Ingham County. Those who enjoy being on the water can rent canoes and kayaks there and join canoe and kayak tours. Two 18-hole disc golf courses add an active land-based alternative to the offerings.

Lakes, River Trails and Nature Parks

Lake Lansing is 1.2 miles long, 1 mile wide and up to 34 feet deep. At Lake Lansing Park South, swimming, fishing and picnic areas are part of the experience. The park also features a historic carousel building, a bathhouse, a beach, a multipurpose pier, a seasonal snack bar, a beachside playground and covered picnic areas. Lake Lansing Park North has a different focus: More than 530 acres of forests, wetlands, pine plantations and transitional fields are crossed by 10 miles of trails. A 2.4-mile loop is marked with interpretive signs; in winter, cross-country skiing is possible in the snowy forests.

Hawk Island also combines relaxation and activity. The 100-acre park in southern Lansing features naturally landscaped areas, a swimming beach and a splash pad. A 1.5-mile paved, low-barrier trail and fishing piers make a variety of day plans possible; snow tubing is offered there in winter. At the Riverbend Natural Area, nature trails lead through old-growth forests, fields in various stages of succession, a creek, wooded floodplains and riparian habitats. Hiking and cycling are permitted in summer, while the trails are groomed for cross-country skiing in winter.

McNamara Landing provides access to the Grand River for days of paddling. Canoe and kayak trips are possible as weather permits. Restrooms, picnic tables and grills are also available on the grounds. The Middle Grand River Water Trail stretches for 87 miles and offers river paddling experiences through communities in Ingham County. Those who want to observe wildlife and landscapes can also include the 200-acre Ingham Conservation District property with its diverse wildlife and habitat landscapes in their plans; birdwatching and mountain biking are possible there.

Family Experiences and Nature Education

Potter Park Zoo covers a 20-acre zoo within an 80-acre park and is home to more than 350 animals. Guided tours and smartphone audio tours complement a visit to the zoo. The zoo is certified as a sensory-inclusive environment and provides sensory bags free of charge. The free monthly FALCONERS Family Program is intended for people with special needs and their families.

The Harris Nature Center is located on the Red Cedar River in Meridian Riverfront Park. Six miles of trails pass through forests, meadows and wetlands and run along the banks of the Red Cedar River. Fenner Nature Center offers opportunities for hiking. The Impression 5 Science Center provides interactive discoveries: Visitors can play, create, experiment and test things in the exhibits. The science center is located in a historic warehouse on the riverfront in downtown Lansing. At the MSU Museum, three floors feature exhibits on science and culture, hands-on activities and life-size, articulated casts of dinosaur skeletons.

History as a Travel Focus in Its Own Right

Meridian Historical Village consists of eight historic buildings in Central Park in Okemos. The Michigan History Museum presents Michigan's history across five floors, from the Anishinaabe to the mid-20th century, and features special exhibitions on Michigan history every year. The Mason Area Historical Society hosts a public lecture on Mason's history at its monthly general meeting, except in December, January and February.

Other points of interest include the annual Ingham County Fair, which honors Michigan's agricultural heritage, as well as historic Baldwin Park. It is historically significant as an Indigenous campsite and an early settlement in Ingham County and offers a canoe launch and fishing opportunities. Pink School Museum was built in 1854. For further orientation in the area, you can also visit the pages on Lansing, East Lansing, Meridian Charter Township and Williamston.

Choose the Right Vacation Rental Based on Your Travel Interests

When searching for a vacation rental in Ingham, your preferred daily rhythm can be the deciding factor. Those who prefer combining trails, forests and nature observation will find different focal points at Lake Lansing Park North, the Riverbend Natural Area, Harris Nature Center and the Ingham Conservation District. Families can include Potter Park Zoo, the splash pad and the museums in their plans, while historic sites and exhibitions offer a quieter cultural accent.
