Iron County combines an unusual lake landscape with winter sports, regional history, and remarkable natural features. Some 250 lakes ranging in size from 2 to 5,200 acres shape the landscape. In addition, there are water activities, historic sites, and trails that make a variety of travel plans possible. If you are looking for a vacation apartment or vacation home, it is therefore worth deciding first what you want to focus on: water and nature, winter activities, culture, or a combination of these.

Discover Lakes, Water, and Landscapes

Bewabic State Park has an accessible boat launch. It provides the only public boat access to the Fortune Lakes Chain. From Memorial Day through September, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and canoes are available for rent there. Pentoga Park also has a beach. For a trip that appeals to different interests, these water experiences can be combined with peaceful natural destinations.

At the Paint River Boardwalk in Crystal Falls, you will find parking, accessible facilities, accessible fishing piers, and a nature trail with interpretive signs. Larson Park is surrounded by an old birch-maple forest. Fortune Pond, in turn, is a former mining site reclaimed by nature. These different landscapes can help you decide whether to choose your accommodation primarily for water activities, nature observation, or cultural excursions.

Winter Days on Trails and at Snow Tubing Parks

In winter, Iron County offers 260 miles of groomed snowmobile trails connected to additional routes across the Upper Peninsula and in Wisconsin. There are also miles of cross-country ski trails and two downhill ski areas. Ski Brule offers two snow tubing hills: Whitewater Snow Tubing Park and Homestead Snow Tubing Park. Anyone planning a vacation rental for a winter trip can use these offerings as a guide for planning daily activities and routes without limiting the trip to just one activity.

History at Specific Sites

The Iron County Museum in Caspian comprises 25 buildings, more than 100 exhibits, and two art galleries. It is designated the “Log Cabin Capital of Michigan.” Above the museum stands a headframe over a flooded, 539-foot-deep mine shaft. It is considered the oldest surviving headframe of its kind in Michigan. The Amasa Museum is located in Amasa’s Main Street Historical District in a former township hall and is an example of late-19th-century balloon-frame architecture.

The Iron County Courthouse was built in 1890, is listed in the state and national registers of historic places, and is part of the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan Heritage Trail. The Iron County Heritage Trail is 36 miles long and includes 14 designated sites, some of which are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Alpha Circle Historic District showcases early engineering with significant public buildings arranged around a traffic circle. Camp Gibbs Recreation Area was established in 1935 as a Civilian Conservation Corps camp.

Special Natural and Cultural Experiences

Crystal Falls is home to the fungus known as the “Humongous Fungus,” a specimen of the species Armillaria gallica. It covers 38 acres and is estimated to weigh 200,000 pounds. It is celebrated at the Humongous Fungus Festival in August. The Historic Crystal Theatre hosts live performances several times a month and also screens classic films and documentaries of local interest. For a varied trip, you can intentionally combine nature, regional history, and culture.

As a directly subordinate destination of Iron County, you can include Iron River in your further planning. If you would like to compare additional destinations, Grand Traverse, Crawford County, Gogebic County, Manistee County, Midland County, Huron County, and Dickinson County can also serve as additional points of reference.
