Calhoun County combines expansive trails, river landscapes, nature observation, and unusual museums with the three cities of Battle Creek, Albion, and Marshall. The communities are located close to one another within the county and are connected by the Kalamazoo River. This makes it possible to plan a trip in different ways: with long walks, historical discoveries, family activities, or several communities as varied destinations.

Trails for Active Days and Relaxed Routes

The Battle Creek Linear Park extends for more than 25 miles through wooded areas, open fields, parks, and commercial districts. The Linear Park Trail also features 26 miles of paved paths and connects to several additional trails. A shorter alternative is the Calhoun County Trailway, which covers 5.6 miles through three different parks.

The Marshall Riverwalk also has its own distinctive features. The 1.6-mile route combines elevated boardwalks with paved paths and includes five pedestrian bridges, boating and canoe launch areas, and viewpoints. Wooded sections follow Rice Creek and the Kalamazoo River and provide opportunities for wildlife observation. Those interested in the city's history can follow the Marshall Historical Walking Route. It runs along sidewalks and has historical information plaques at more than 15 locations.

Nature, Water, and Wildlife Observation

The Brooks Nature Area showcases different landscapes in a compact, varied setting. These include an 88-acre restored native prairie and 97 acres of unplanted land with hedgerows, wetlands, and wooded areas. There are 2.3 miles of maintained trails for walking. The trailhead area borders restored native tallgrass prairie and offers views of Stuart Lake. There, you can look for sandhill cranes, great egrets, Canada geese, and numerous duck species.

More trail experiences can be found along the North Country Scenic Trail, which runs through several parks in Calhoun County, including Historic Bridge Park. The Iron Belle Trail connects to the North Country National Scenic Trail in Calhoun County. Historic Bridge Park has picnic tables and grills for group barbecues. Nearby, between Battle Creek and Kalamazoo, Fort Custer Recreation Area offers more than 40 miles of trails as well as opportunities for paddling and fishing.

Museums and Experiences for Different Interests

The American Museum of Magic has celebrated magicians and the art of magic since 1978. Group tours can be booked on any weekday and also outside regular opening hours. From April through October, a magic performance takes place there every Saturday at 2 p.m. The Kingman Museum combines natural history, science, and culture into engaging, relevant, and accessible experiences for everyone.

For families, the Kids 'N' Stuff Children's Museum offers hands-on themes. In the “Your Town” exhibit, children can role-play community jobs, such as being a shop owner or a public safety employee. The “Wonder Wing” area contains a 16-foot-long water table modeled on the channels of the Kalamazoo River in downtown Albion; the bridge and waterfall are based on Albion's Cass Street Bridge. The museum is wheelchair accessible and has an elevator on the entrance level, although a small number of exhibit elements are not wheelchair accessible. Programs and events are offered year-round.

At Binder Park Zoo, Wild Africa enables close-up encounters with giraffes and hand-feeding the animals. Those looking for regional products can find fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, poultry, baked goods, plants, and flowers at the Marshall Area Farmers' Market. Special events include the National Cereal Fest, with a free breakfast, magic performances, music, and bounce houses, as well as the Calhoun County Fair. Dating back to 1849, it is Michigan's oldest continuously held county fair at the same location. The program includes main-stage shows, rides, livestock exhibits, fair food, and community-organized events. The National Cereal Fest first made it into the Guinness Book of Records in 1979.
