Berrien combines the landscape of Lake Michigan with dunes, forests, wetlands, riverbanks, and a variety of destinations for day trips. Those planning a trip with nature experiences, outdoor activities, culture, and regional flavors can choose the right vacation rental or vacation home based on their preferred experiences. Both active days and more leisurely explorations are available.

Beaches, Dunes, and Trails Along Lake Michigan

Silver Beach County Park has a wide beach on Lake Michigan and provides public access to the South Pier. For easy access around the site, a step-free path leads from the parking lot along the beach promenade and through the entire park. Rocky Gap County Park has 1,100 feet of Lake Michigan shoreline; an additional Lake Michigan Overlook Deck is located in the upper area.

At Grand Mere State Park, half a mile of Lake Michigan shoreline can be reached via two trails. Warren Dunes State Park offers three miles of shoreline and dunes rising 260 feet above the lake. There are also six miles of hiking trails. At the same park, Third Coast Surf rents stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, and pedal boats. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose different focuses, from the beach and hiking to activities on the water.

Forests, River Landscapes, and Wildlife Observation

Madeline Bertrand County Park is a natural area along the St. Joseph River. Trails lead through pine and oak forests, and the park also has a challenging 18-hole disc golf course. Love Creek County Park features a 200-acre natural area, mature beech-maple forest, and spring wildflowers. Nine miles of hiking trails give this destination a particular appeal for longer walks and hiking days.

Galien River County Park encompasses habitats in higher terrain and wetlands. A 300-foot-long Canopy Walkway leads to a 60-foot-high Marsh Overlook Tower. In spring, summer, and fall, the park is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Warren Woods Nature Study Area is recognized as both a National Natural Landmark and a legally designated nature area. Paw Paw River County Park adds approximately 14 acres of wilderness to this selection.

Grand Mere State Park also offers a specific activity in addition to its shoreline: fishing for bluegill sunfish is popular at its two inland lakes. During the colder season, the Berrien County Parks Commission offers cross-country skiing opportunities in the county parks.
