Barry County: Nature, History and Special Excursions
Accommodation in Barry County
Barry County combines glacially shaped landscapes, waterways, historic places and unusual insights into American automotive history. Those planning a trip with varied ideas for each day will find both extensive nature experiences and cultural destinations here. When choosing a vacation rental or vacation home, it is therefore worthwhile to first determine your preferred focus: hiking, water, birdwatching, history or a visit to a museum.
Nature, Lakes and Trails for Varied Days
One distinctive natural destination is the Bailey Nature Preserve. It features a 30-acre lake where fishing, canoeing and kayaking are possible. A conservation easement permanently protects the preserve’s natural features. Historic Charlton Park also combines landscape and history: The site covers 310 acres and is located on Thornapple Lake. More than three miles of hiking trails lead through woodland, restored prairie, field margins and wildlife habitats.
The Pierce Cedar Creek Institute provides access to wetlands, forests, prairies and agricultural habitats. More than nine miles of public trails can be used there free of charge year-round, from dawn to dusk. The institute’s landscape was shaped by the melting of the Saginaw lobe of the ice sheet. Those who want to go birdwatching can also explore the Thornapple Birding Trail. It passes through numerous bird-rich habitats across more than 22,000 acres of state wildlife areas, many parks and more than 250 lakes.
Routes and Glacial Landscapes
For longer excursions, the Paul Henry–Thornapple Trail is an interesting project. The multi-use recreational route is being developed as a 42-mile connection from Grand Rapids to Vermontville; some sections have already been completed. Its route passes through farmland, forests and small towns, along and across rivers and streams, and in the immediate vicinity of the Thornapple River. When planning your day, you should note that the overall route is still being developed and that not every section is at the same stage.
Another geological feature is Devil's Soupbowl in the Yankee Springs Recreation Area, a glacial formation. Depending on your interests, you can combine longer trails, waterscapes and striking natural formations without limiting the trip to just one type of experience.
Bridges, Indigenous History and Automotive Culture
Built in 1903, the McKeown Road Bridge is the last surviving metal truss road bridge in Barry County. The associated McKeown Bridge Park is accessible to wheelchair users. Indian Landing represents a different historical focus: The site was added to the Michigan Historical Register in 1972 in recognition of its first Indigenous inhabitants. The area around Indian Landing was inhabited by the Potawatomi, Odawa and Ojibwa; in 1835, villages existed there in Sections 24 and 25 of Hastings Township.
The Gilmore Car Museum is dedicated to preserving the history and heritage of the American automobile. More than 400 vehicles are displayed across more than 209,100 square feet of exhibition space. The 90-acre Historic Campus includes seven partner museums located on site and has one of the largest collections of hood ornaments and automotive mascots in North America. The “Vintage Rides” program allows guests to ride in a classic car with a trained museum docent. For longer stays, the museum also offers simply equipped campsites on site.
Choosing the Right Base
Barry County is well suited to trip planning that alternates active and cultural days. Those with a particular interest in history or automobiles, on the other hand, can plan more time for Indian Landing, the McKeown Road Bridge and the Gilmore Car Museum. The different themes help you choose a vacation rental in Barry County according to your preferred travel rhythm, without reducing the region to a single attraction.
For further research, you can also consider Rutland Charter Township and Orangeville Island. This leaves room to continue getting to know Barry County beyond its nature, history and diverse excursion destinations.
