Cherryvale: Local History and Lakeside Landscape
Accommodation in Cherryvale
Cherryvale combines an engaging local history with lakes, parks, and events. If you are looking for a mix of culture and outdoor activities during your trip, you will find a variety of points of interest here: from the neoclassical library building and a museum with an unusual historical connection to excursions to Lake Tanko and nearby Big Hill Lake.
Library, Museum, and Brick Architecture
A prominent cultural attraction is the Cherryvale Carnegie Free Library at 329 E. Main. The single-story brick building was constructed in the neoclassical style and continues to be used as a library. The Carnegie Foundation provided the necessary funds for the permanent library building in 1912; it was constructed in 1913. The Cherryvale Public (Carnegie) Library is also listed in the inventory of Carnegie libraries in Kansas.
The Cherryvale Museum presents the stories of Frank Bellamy, Louise Brooks, and Vivian Vance. The museum also displays a replica of the Bender House, which is associated with the murders of the Bender family. This part of exploring the town therefore appeals not only to visitors interested in architecture, but also to anyone who appreciates unusual historical stories.
The downtown area contributes to Cherryvale’s distinctive appearance: most of the streets, sidewalks, and buildings were constructed from bricks produced by six brick factories. As you walk through the town, you can therefore look out for this recurring building material and experience the architecture as part of the local history.
Lakes, Parks, and Nature Experiences
Lake Tanko is a 45-acre lake. It was built in 1870 to supply steam locomotives for the railroad, connecting today’s landscape with the town’s railroad history. Big Hill Lake is also located near Cherryvale and has three campgrounds, three trailheads for horseback riding trails, and four public day-use recreation areas.
The Ruth Nixon Memorial Trail runs along Big Hill Lake. The trail is approximately one mile long and offers opportunities for wildlife observation. Logan Park covers four city blocks and features a swimming pool, a pavilion, picnic tables, and a large play area. If you are traveling with children, you can include the park as a specific part of your day; those who prefer nature observation can include the trail and the area around Big Hill Lake in their travel plans.
Events and Suitable Trip Planning
The Cherry Blossom Festival takes place annually in Cherryvale, as does the Cherryvale Youth Fair. Since no fixed dates are available for these events, you should adjust your travel plans to the currently scheduled event period. Regardless, Cherryvale remains interesting for a range of day plans thanks to its museum, library, park, and lakes.
When searching for a vacation rental or other accommodation in Cherryvale, you can first decide which focus best suits your trip: cultural discoveries in town, time at Logan Park, wildlife observation along the Ruth Nixon Memorial Trail, or excursions to nearby Big Hill Lake.
