Experience Bison and Prairie Up Close
A particular highlight is the Sandsage Bison Range Wildlife Area. Guided tours to observe bison and other attractions are available by reservation; self-guided tours are currently not possible there. The area preserves native sandsage prairie that has not been converted into cultivated, irrigated farmland. It is also home to the oldest publicly owned bison herd in Kansas. For wildlife observation, the prairie provides habitat for prairie chickens, mule deer, quail and western hognose snakes. In the northern part of the area, limited fishing is also available at the sandpit lake.
Wildlife, Water and Active Days
Lee Richardson Zoo adds a special perspective to the nature experience: visitors can drive through the zoo. Those who visit the zoo on foot pay no admission fee. At the Finnup Center for Conservation Education, you can discover animal habitats and interactive exhibits.
Big Pool is another notable experience. It features five slides, a diving pool and a partition that divides the pool into a north and a south half. Garden City residents dug the pool by hand in 1921, and it opened for its first season in 1922. Today, it is considered the world's largest free municipal concrete swimming pool.
For gentler outdoor exercise, Forest Park Lake is located within the City of Garden City. The 16-acre nature park provides a habitat for wildlife and features a 1/3-mile paved loop trail with direct access to the Talley Trail via a walkway. The Talley Trail itself is 3.7 miles long and crosses almost the entirety of Garden City from east to west. In addition, the Garden City Parks and Recreation disc golf league offers a weekly six-week series at The Crater, ending with a tournament.
Museums, Art and History
Admission to the Finney County Historical Museum is free. An exhibit on the Santa Fe Trail explains its history and connections to Southwest Kansas. Those interested in local history can also visit the Pleasant Valley One-Room Schoolhouse, which was built around 1890.
Admission to Garden City Arts' gallery is free. Rotating exhibitions showcase works by local and regional artists. The Mercer Gallery broadens the range with exhibitions by regional, national and international artists. Hands-on workshops and talks by artists provide opportunities for active cultural engagement. This makes it possible to enjoy a varied vacation day combining exhibitions with your own creative activities.
Events with a Regional Character
Beef Empire Days hosts more than a dozen events every year, including a family-friendly carnival. The Ranch Rodeo features roping, horsemanship and ground work. The annual Merck Live Show is aimed at everyone interested in the cattle-feeding industry. The public is welcome at the Finney County Pioneer Awards Banquet in April. Another format is Evening in the Past: On a Saturday evening in late May, it combines a dinner on the museum terrace with a historical reenactment; tickets are available from the museum office.
