Green Castle Recreation Area offers a different focus: It includes a 16-acre lake and a 116.5-acre area. An astronomical observatory is also part of the site. A boat ramp provides access for canoes and kayaks. Special Landscapes around Marshall
Marietta Sand Prairie is a 17-acre protected area with eolian, or wind-blown, sand deposits and a sand prairie. In places, the sands are up to 36 feet deep and provide a habitat for sand-loving prairie plants. Timmons Grove South offers another focal point: a 205-acre, wooded recreational area in the Iowa River Greenbelt. It has RV sites with electrical hookups for 25 to 30 amps as well as a boat ramp to the Iowa River. The Iowa River Wildlife Area covers 485 acres; two-thirds of it is forest and one-third is grassland along the Iowa River Greenbelt.
Art and History as a Complement
The Mormon Ridge Log Cabin is believed to have been built in 1856. On December 10, 1991, it was moved 300 feet to its present location. Organized groups can arrange an appointment for an open house. The Fisher Art Collection, featuring Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art, provides a cultural counterpoint to the landscape. The Fisher Art Museum is located in the Marshalltown Arts and Civic Center.
