Nature Parks Between Creek, River and Forest
Buffalo Creek Park is located in northeastern Linn County on Buffalo Creek and covers 128 acres. The park provides habitat for wild turkeys, deer, nesting Canada geese, beavers and foxes. A level, 1.2-mile gravel trail runs along Buffalo Creek and through wetlands. The park also has a kayak launch. Those who want to combine water, wildlife viewing and a manageable trail distance when planning their trip will find a clearly defined outing destination here.
The 352-acre Morgan Creek Park lies in the Morgan Creek valley, immediately west of the Cedar Rapids city limits in Linn County. More than four miles of trails can be used there year-round. This allows for a different kind of day planning than at Buffalo Creek Park: Instead of a single short trail, there are several trails across a larger park area. The 1,018-acre Pinicon Ridge Park is located on the Wapsipinicon River. Its terrain is hilly and densely wooded, with a diverse wildlife population. During the summer months, the Watercraft Concession rents kayaks, canoes, pedal boats and paddleboards there.
Trails for Hiking, Cycling and Nature Experiences
Wanatee Park also offers various ways to spend a day outdoors. The four-mile trail is suitable for hiking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, running and cross-country skiing. The trail network also includes six miles of mountain biking trails and a skills park. The park is named after Adeline Wanatee (1910–1996), an artist and advocate for the rights of Indigenous people and women who was inducted into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame in 1993. In this way, activity in the park is connected with a personal and regional history.
For longer excursions, the Cedar Valley Nature Trail offers a different scale. Including the section from Cedar Rapids to the Johnson County line, it is 68 miles long. In spring, summer and fall, the trail can be used for walking, running, cycling and inline skating.
Historical Perspectives in and Around Linn
The historic Center Point Historic Depot houses the Center Point Historical Society Museum and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018. In the context of Cedar Rapids, Brucemore also stands out: a 26-acre estate centered on a historic Queen Anne-style mansion dating from 1886. Wickiup Hill is designated as part of the Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area. These places complement the nature experiences with insights into regional history and culture.
