Rare plants, Black Terns, Northern Harriers, Regal Fritillaries, and Arogos Skippers are among the notable features mentioned there. Gull Point State Park also showcases the region’s geological and landscape diversity. Between Miller’s Bay and Emerson’s Bay on West Okoboji Lake, curving shorelines strewn with boulders extend along the water. A 1.3-mile self-guided interpretive trail leads through the park. The area also features highly reliefed, hilly and irregular “knob-and-kettle” terrain with swamp channels, bogs, and wetland depressions. Elinor Bedell State Park is located on East Lake Okoboji and offers trails, a playground, and camping opportunities.
Trails for Cycling, Winter Activities, and Water Sports
For more challenging recreational cycling, the Dickinson County trail system includes 60 miles of marked routes on low-traffic county roads. The 15-mile Spine Trail runs from north to south through Dickinson County and connects with numerous additional trails. In winter, more than 100 miles of snowmobile trails cross the county. Groomed cross-country ski trails connect Brooks Golf Course with the Dickinson County Nature Center in Okoboji.
Those who prefer being on the water can paddle along the Little Sioux River through the natural areas along its banks. At Trappers Bay State Park, shore fishing is available for walleye, pike, bass, crappies, and catfish. For a shorter break, the picnic tables at Pikes Point State Park offer views of the lake. This makes it possible to combine active and more leisurely parts of the day without limiting your trip to a single activity.
History and Culture by the Lake
The Dickinson County Museum preserves local history through exhibits, historic buildings, and artifacts. Admission is free. The museum includes Steve’s Depot, housed in an original railroad depot from 1884. The Iowa Great Lakes Maritime Museum complements this focus with a rare collection of antique wooden boats and a boat recovered from the depths of West Okoboji. Public walking tours last 30 to 60 minutes each.
The Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Museum focuses on music history. Its exhibits include a recording studio, a radio booth, a jukebox, and historic posters and record albums. In Arnolds Park, Abbie Gardner returned in 1891, purchased the cabin, and operated it as one of Iowa’s earliest tourist attractions. Today, Arnolds Park offers more than 20 rides.

The Dickinson County Nature Center combines nature observation with hands-on exploration: offerings include live animals, an observation beehive, a topographic sand table, and interactive exhibits in Pollinator Paradise. The grounds also feature a Nature Playscape, an observation tower for viewing the pond, a disc golf course, and trails. On the grounds of the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, visitors can take a self-guided nature exploration using a treasure map available at the entrance.
