The Greentown Glass Museum focuses on more than 2,000 glass pieces and historical objects. An extensive exhibition compares original pieces from the Indiana Tumbler and Goblet Company with reproductions. The company operated in Greentown from 1894 to 1903. The comparison brings the history of glassmaking to life and complements a visit to Seiberling Mansion with another specific topic from the region’s industrial history.
For a different pace, visit the Kirkendall Nature Center. This free, science-based facility offers activities, crafts, and animals on-site. Special visits and demonstrations are available by appointment. Those who prefer to explore on their own can use the Industrial Heritage Trail, which connects historic industrial sites and continues to the Nickel Plate Trail.
For more orientation within the area, visit Kokomo. The Wildcat Creek Walk of Excellence there is a 3.4-mile paved urban trail that connects several parks with historic downtown Kokomo. A music festival in western Howard County focuses on bluegrass music, workshops, arts and crafts vendors, and food and drinks in mid-August.
The events calendar also includes a craft beer and spirits festival with breweries, distilleries, food trucks, and live music, as well as a Christmas event at Seiberling Mansion. It runs from the Saturday after Thanksgiving through the end of the year and combines elaborate holiday decorations with thousands of lights. The history of the automobile is also represented: In 1894, Elwood Haynes invented the first commercially successful gasoline-powered automobile in the United States.
