Clark combines impressive nature with fossils, water activities, and a multifaceted regional history. Anyone planning a trip to Clark can choose between hikes through wooded landscapes, excursions to the fossil beds along the Ohio River, and cultural discoveries. This combination can also help when searching for a suitable vacation rental or vacation home: The key question is whether you want to focus on active days, observing nature, water, or history.

Forests, Elevation Changes, and Historic Trails

At Charlestown State Park, the view extends across the valley of Fourteenmile Creek and the Ohio River. At the same time, the park features elevation changes of more than 200 feet. While hiking there, you can see Devonian fossil outcrops and karst sinkhole landscapes. Rose Island offers a special combination of nature and history and can be reached via the historic Portersville Bridge. The bridge was rebuilt at its present location between 2008 and 2011.

Clark State Forest was established in 1903 and is Indiana's oldest state forest. It includes four nature preserves: White Oak, Virginia Pine-Chestnut Oak, Alum Cave Hollow, and Outbrook Ravine. Seven lakes in the state forest are open to boating and fishing. This allows for a varied stay: An active morning can be followed by a relaxing day by the water, without limiting nature experiences to a single activity.

Deam Lake and Trails for Different Travel Plans

At Deam Lake, fishing, boating, swimming, camping, picnicking, hiking, and hunting in designated areas are possible. Deam Lake State Recreation Area also offers camping with electric hookups, electric equestrian camping, and Rent-a-Camp cabins, as well as trail connections to Clark State Forest. This area may be particularly appealing when choosing accommodation in Clark if you enjoy filling your days with several activities or combining nature and relaxation.

The trails also differ considerably. The Yellow Horse Trail is a scenic, approximately six-mile loop around the lake and large parts of the grounds. The Lake Vista Trail at Deam Lake is an estimated 2.5-mile challenging trail with a rock cut and views of the lake. Mountain bikers will also find the 20-mile Overland Trail in Clark State Forest, which partly follows the routes of several equestrian trails, the Lake Vista Trail, and the Deam Lake Loop.

Fossils and Nature Observation along the Ohio River

The 220-acre fossil beds at Falls of the Ohio are generally most accessible from August to October, when the river level is at its lowest. Falls of the Ohio State Park has an Interpretive Center with interactive, immersive exhibits and offers a Fossil Challenge. The fossil bed is 390 million years old, dates from the Devonian, and is considered one of the oldest of its kind in the world. More than 270 bird species have also been recorded at Falls of the Ohio.

Those planning a stay with changing interests will find a clear contrast here to the forest and lake areas. The George Rogers Clark Home Site encompasses a 7-acre site within Falls of the Ohio State Park and is also located within the 1,404-acre National Wildlife Conservation Area. The Falls of the Ohio area therefore combines geological themes, landscapes, and historic sites.

Regional History and Excursions

The Clark County Museum presents the county's history from the time of Native Americans to the present day. Its collection includes maps, clothing, vehicles, works of art, and archaeological objects. The exhibits also cover the county's role as an important route of the Underground Railroad and include replicas of historic landmarks. Clark County was the starting point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1803.

Another cultural highlight is Schimpff's. With advance booking, live demonstrations of candy making are offered there; products include Cinnamon Red Hots, hand-dipped chocolates, and caramel-covered Modjeskas. For additional ideas of places to visit, you can also explore Jeffersonville, Sellersburg, and Borden.

Clark is therefore suitable for travel plans in which nature experiences, water, fossils, and history stand side by side. When searching for a vacation rental or vacation home, you can first decide which of these facets should set the pace of your stay.
