Washington County combines river landscapes, lakes, challenging hiking trails, and an unusually diverse range of historic sites. River Landscapes and Lakes for Different Days of Travel

In Harrison, Crawford, and Washington Counties, the Blue River is part of a natural, scenic river system that serves recreational purposes. The section described extends from river mile 57 downstream to river mile 11.5. This makes the river landscape an important part of the natural experience in Washington County. There are also numerous lakes suitable for canoeing, fishing, and swimming. There is a boat ramp at Spurgeon Hollow Lake. There is also a distinctive landscape around Beck's Mill. Beyond the mill, another 3 miles of trails run over the hills, past three additional springs, until they follow the high, steep slope of Mill Creek. Beck's Mill is also the only surviving mill in Indiana that carried out the entire milling process exclusively with millstones. This makes it possible to combine a walk through the landscape with a specific historic destination.

History Between a Village Model, Museum, and Historic Buildings

Pioneer Village is a recreation of a community from the 1830s. At the Depot Railroad Museum, you can see railroad equipment and tools, as well as signs, advertisements, signals, and lanterns. The John Hays Birthplace has been a National Historic Site since 1971. These places offer different perspectives: Pioneer Village conveys the image of an early community, while the railroad museum presents technical and everyday aspects of transportation history.

Other notable structures include Beck's Mill and the Blue River Friends Hicksite Meeting House. Beck's Mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. The Meeting House was built in 1815–1816 from local materials and is the oldest surviving Quaker meetinghouse in Indiana. In Salem stands the Washington County Courthouse, a Richardsonian Romanesque-style building constructed in 1886.

Cornucopia Farm is located 10 miles east of Salem and features corn and soybean mazes, a petting zoo, and pumpkin fields. LM Sugarbush is a 140-acre farm in Salem, Indiana, that hosts an annual maple syrup festival. Salem Speedway officially opened on June 22, 1947, adding a destination with a history of motorsports to the selection.
