Carroll County: Canals, Trails and History

Carroll County combines river landscapes, waterfront trails and an unusually vivid history of transportation and settlement. Around Delphi, you can experience the Wabash River, historic canal themes and short distances as well as longer explorations. Canals, Rivers and Trails as a Travel Experience

A special introduction to the region's history is The Delphi, a 54-foot-long replica canal boat. It is used for narrated rides lasting approximately 40 minutes. At the Wabash & Erie Canal Interpretive Center, interactive exhibits explain the development of the Wabash & Erie Canal from 1832 to 1876. During Canal Season, visitors can see historic crafts in action at Pioneer Village on Saturday afternoons from late May through mid-September.

Even beyond these attractions, the landscape can be explored along various routes. The City of Delphi and Wabash & Erie Canal Park maintain a trail network with more than 10 miles of trails to explore. The Campbell Ridge Trail is a 1-mile loop to a viewpoint above the confluence of Deer Creek and the Wabash River. Shorter options include Happy Jack's Loop on the north bank of Deer Creek, measuring 0.5 miles, and the 0.9-mile loop in Flora Community Park. The Riley-City Trail measures 1.5 miles and crosses Deer Creek.

Historic Sites and Regional Identity

The Delphi Courthouse Square Historic District contains 43 buildings, many of which date from the 1850s to the 1870s. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 31, 2010. French Post Park is located on the Wabash River, where Rock Creek flows into the Wabash. The site was a fur-trading post for three years beginning in 1820. Today, fishing, picnicking, canoeing and boating are among the recreational activities listed there.

Adams Mill and Adams Mill Bridge offer further insights into the past. The machinery at Adams Mill is still preserved, while commercial milling operations ended in 1951. Adams Mill Bridge is a Howe truss bridge dating from 1872 and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A trail runs along the outer edge beside the creek from the mill site to the covered bridge; there is a staircase to the bridge. The Obear Millrace Trail follows an old millrace to the sites of former paper mills.

Festivals and Different Daily Rhythms

The Canal Days Festival in Delphi takes place every Fourth of July weekend at Canal Park. The program includes narrated walks on the trails, children's activities and food vendors. Held annually on the fourth Saturday in August, the Indiana Bacon Festival combines bacon-focused foods with live music, a family zone, and craft beer and wine. The Old Settlers Celebration takes place every year from Thursday through the second Saturday in August and traces its origins to an annual gathering of the county's first settlers that has been held since 1855.
