Discover Rock Falls: Art, River and Nature
Accommodation in Rock Falls
Rock Falls brings together art, river scenery and nature watching, along with a variety of park amenities. The RB&W Park hosts a year-round sculpture exhibition featuring works by artists from Illinois; the RB&W District Park is located along the Rock River. Other attractions include a bird-watching trail, a schoolhouse museum and events held on set dates. If you’re looking for a vacation rental, it helps to consider your travel dates alongside your interests: nature, culture and outdoor activities shape different kinds of days.
Art, Change and Local History
Each selected sculpture remains in RB&W Park for one year. The annual changeover begins in September with a gala, giving the exhibition both a year-round presence and a specific moment when the selection is renewed. Works by artists from Illinois give it a regional connection. The gala marks the changeover, not the entire run of the exhibition: the sculpture exhibition takes place year-round, while each selection remains for one year.
The Little Red Schoolhouse and Historical Museum is located in the northeastern part of Centennial Park, inside a one-room schoolhouse. The museum offers a different cultural focus from the sculpture exhibition: here, the distinctive schoolhouse setting defines the place, while the exhibition is shaped by its annually changing collection. The museum was open to the public by appointment.
Parks and Nature Watching
Centennial Park offers a lake, fishing, pedal boat rentals and access to the Hennepin Canal Walking Trail. Several activities are available within Centennial Park; the Rock Falls Birding Trail, by contrast, is organized around a specific route. You can compare the park amenities with a trail route as you consider what kind of outdoor time suits your stay.
The Rock Falls Birding Trail starts at Upper Dam, runs along Second Street and loops around Lawrence Park. You can follow its route in sequence: from the starting point, along a named street and around the park. In winter, bald eagles gather in the trees along the Rock River in Rock Falls to hunt for fish. These two nature experiences offer different points of reference: the trail answers the question of where the route goes, while eagle watching is tied to the season. When planning your trip, you can weigh whether a named route or a winter wildlife spectacle matters more to you.
Events Throughout the Year
The Rock River Chase is considered a long-standing summer tradition and returned to Rock Falls on August 15 and 16, 2026. Stock outboard boat races were on the program at Seward’s Park on the Rock River. As an event held on specific dates, the Chase differs from the year-round sculpture exhibition.
The sixth annual Lumberjack Show at Selmi’s Farm was scheduled for October 3, 2026, in Rock Falls. A full day of lumberjack shows, family activities and fall entertainment was planned, with an interactive lumberjack camp for children scheduled for 1:30 p.m. The dates listed refer to the 2026 editions. If you’re planning a later trip, check the event dates again.
