Discover Whiteside County: Nature, Rivers and History
Accommodation in Whiteside County
Whiteside County combines river landscapes, historic sites and varied trails to create a destination with many different facets. Between the Rock River, the Mississippi and the Hennepin Canal, you will find nature experiences as well as windmills, reconstructed historic sites and regional traditions. When searching for a suitable vacation rental, it is therefore worth first deciding on your preferred travel focus: Should the trip center on water and landscapes, or more strongly on history, culture and distinctive attractions?
Nature Between Lake, River and Canal
Morrison-Rockwood State Park covers 1,164 acres and is located north of Morrison in Whiteside County. The park is home to Lake Carlton, a reservoir created in 1969 by constructing a 38-foot-high, 1,800-foot-long earth embankment across a stream channel. Prophetstown State Park lies on the south bank of the Rock River. Coon Creek flows through the park and empties into the Rock River. The Wa-bo-kie-shiek Nature Trail follows the edge of Coon Creek for approximately one-third of a mile. These varied landscapes give you the opportunity to plan your outings around water, woods and riverbanks.
The Hennepin Canal is also an important part of the region’s landscape and cultural history. The entire canal is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Along the canal, there are more than 100 miles of scenic towpaths, as well as parking areas where you can switch to cycling or hiking. The Hennepin Canal Visitor Center is located directly along the towpath. Its offerings include museum exhibits, models of a lock system and an aqueduct, as well as preserved Illinois wildlife species.
Historic Sites and Unusual Discoveries
History comes particularly vividly to life around Fulton. Heritage Canyon is a reconstructed 19th-century village in a restored 12-acre quarry on the Mississippi River. During special events, the Early American Crafters and other historical groups demonstrate pioneer crafts there. Fulton is also home to De Immigrant, a 100-foot-tall Dutch windmill. It was built in the Netherlands and reconstructed on a levee above the Mississippi River. Guided tours explain the construction and repair of the windmill, as well as the milling process.
The Windmill Cultural Center features more than 20 European model windmills from 10 European countries. A gift shop offers stone-ground flour, Delftware and souvenirs. Fulton is located along the Great River Trail, providing another direct connection to the regional landscape. The Lock & Dam 13 Recreation Area has a boat launch, an observation platform overlooking the lock chamber, scenic views and a picnic shelter. The launch provides access to the Mississippi River and the backwater areas of Pool 13.
History, Traditions and Attractions
Prophetstown State Park is located at the former site of the village of Wa-bo-kie-shiek, which was destroyed on May 10, 1832. The Ronald Reagan Birthplace features period-style exhibits with photographs, memorabilia and interpretive displays about Ronald Reagan’s childhood and family life. The apartment is designated as the Ronald Reagan Birthplace and was designated a National Historic Site in 2002. In Fulton, an interpretive mural also commemorates the former Fulton-Lyons toll bridge, which allowed motorists to cross the Mississippi.
Another side of the county is represented by the Whiteside County Fair. It combines agriculture, food, exhibits, family-friendly entertainment and traditional harness racing. Harness racing is considered a long-standing tradition and continues to attract spectators every year. The event thus offers a contrast to the quieter nature and history experiences.
