Vermilion is a destination for anyone looking to combine nature experiences, waterways and regional history. Vermilion County is accessible via Interstate 74 and offers a variety of options for planning your day: from longer hiking trails and canoe trips when water levels are sufficient to a museum visit in Danville.

Forests, Prairie and Special Habitats

Forest Glen Preserve covers 1,800 acres and combines beech-maple and oak-hickory forest types. The preserve also contains four registered Illinois Nature Preserves. Those who enjoy combining their stay with a longer hike will find the River Ridge Backpack Trail there. The trail is 10.5 miles long, with a difficulty ranging from easy to challenging. This range should be taken into account when planning your day.

Other landscapes also showcase Vermilion’s diversity. Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area covers 2,700 acres of grassland, forest and farmland that provide habitat for wildlife. At Kennekuk Marshes, visitors can observe ducks, Canada geese, great blue herons, herons and hawks. Kennekuk County Park covers 3,000 acres and includes oak-hickory forests as well as native tallgrass prairie. At Lake Vermilion County Park, the listed wildlife-viewing opportunities include a heron colony, river otters and an eagle nesting site.

Rivers, Lakes and Outdoor Activities

A 17-mile section of the Middle Fork of the Vermilion River is designated as a National Wild and Scenic River. In spring, canoeing and fishing are possible if water levels are sufficient. At Kickapoo State Recreation Area, a canoe rental and shuttle service are available for canoe trips on the scenic river. The area covers 2,842 acres and contains 22 deep, water-filled ponds. The 22 lakes and the Middle Fork River provide access to water-based recreational activities.

Kickapoo State Recreation Area also offers different seasonal activities. In winter, cross-country skiing, sledding, ice fishing and ice skating are offered or practiced. A disc golf course with 9-hole and 18-hole layouts adds to the options. For families with different interests, it may be helpful when planning a trip to alternate between active days on the water, observing nature and a quieter cultural program.

Combine Cycling Trails and History

The Kickapoo Rail Trail is a 24.5-mile multi-use trail for non-road transportation and recreational activities; it is under construction. The Kickapoo Rail Trail Bridge is a renovated trestle bridge located 88 feet above the Middle Fork of the Vermilion River. Parking and restrooms are available at the trailhead on US 150. This trailhead is west of Danville on Route 150 East and east of Oakwood.

For a cultural focus, the Vermilion County Museum is a good choice. Its galleries cover natural history, artifacts of the early Indigenous population, education, coal mining and Abraham Lincoln. The museum is a replica of the 1833 courthouse in Danville, where Abraham Lincoln worked as a lawyer from 1841 to 1859. At Kennekuk County Park, a commemorative brochure and a guide for a walking tour of the Bunker Hill Historic Area are also available at the visitor center.

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Interests

When looking for a vacation rental or vacation home in Vermilion, you can first decide which experiences should define your stay. Nature lovers can focus on preserves, wetlands and expansive parklands. For water activities, the Middle Fork of the Vermilion River and Kickapoo State Recreation Area are important keywords. Those who prefer history and regional topics can include the Vermilion County Museum or the Bunker Hill Historic Area in their plans. Another local highlight is the annual Maple Syrup Open House at Forest Glen Preserve, held on the third Sunday in March. Big Thorn Farm & Brewery is a 15-acre, off-grid farm and brewery in Vermilion County, Illinois.

For further trip planning, you can also look at Potomac and Danville. This allows you to choose accommodation based on your personal priorities among nature, water, trails and culture.
