Hancock County can be explored through impressive historic sites, paths along the water and the distinctive history of Nauvoo. The town was the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the early 1840s. Today, historic buildings, religious memorial sites, traditional crafts and landscape experiences come together there. If you choose a vacation rental as your base, it is worth deciding in advance whether your trip should focus more on history, nature or a combination of both topics.

Nauvoo Between History and a Vibrant Town Setting

Visitors can walk among around 40 historic buildings and other attractions in Nauvoo or take a carriage ride. The restored homes and workshops along Main Street are examples of crafts that were once part of Nauvoo’s economy. At the Browning Gun Shop, missionaries demonstrate gunsmithing. The Family Living Center presents eight different arts and crafts from Nauvoo’s early days; demonstrations take place at the stations, some of which include activities that visitors can participate in.

Religious history is also present at several sites. Historic Nauvoo’s Temple City is a group of buildings and landscapes that provides an overview of the design, construction and religious practices of the original Nauvoo Temple. At the Temple Stones Pavilion, texts and tools illustrate the excavation, shaping and placement of stone for the Nauvoo Temple. Nauvoo Landing is located at the foot of Parley Street on the riverfront. In February 1846, this site was one of the eastern departure points where emigrants assembled their wagons for the crossing of the Mississippi River.

Historic Trails and Special Memorial Sites

The Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail begins in Nauvoo, Illinois, and ends in Salt Lake City, Utah. The official trail is about 1,400 miles long; it is neither clearly marked nor a continuous hiking trail. For trip planning, it is therefore primarily interesting as a historical context rather than as a single, continuously walkable day trip.

Another historical focal point is Carthage Jail. There, a mob murdered Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum in 1844. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can take a free guided tour through the rooms and grounds. The Kibbe Hancock Heritage Museum adds to the historical perspective with artifacts from the American Civil War and from Indigenous peoples, as well as fossils, rocks and geodes.

Lake, Park and Trails for a More Active Day of Travel

Nauvoo State Park is located on the southern edge of Nauvoo along Illinois Route 96 and covers 148 acres. The park includes a 13-acre lake with a one-mile shoreline. The 1.5-mile Lake Trail leads around the lake and through wooded areas. This makes it possible to complement a history-focused stay with a walk in a natural setting without limiting the trip to a single theme.

Lake Horton is stocked with largemouth bass, channel catfish and sunfish for anglers. Nauvoo State Park is also associated with an annual grape festival. The seasonal focus of the events and the range of different activities make it sensible to consider your personal interests when choosing a vacation rental. There is no public transportation within the historic town of Historic Nauvoo. You should take this practical detail into account when planning your visits in the area.

Music, Theater and Shared Discoveries

Historic Nauvoo offers a variety of live music and theater performances throughout the summer. The Nauvoo Pageant is a live outdoor theater production about early converts to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the United States and England. For families who want to combine historical topics with a cultural evening event, this creates a different type of trip from one centered on a day of walking and visiting museums.

A vacation rental in Hancock County can therefore suit different travel plans: days spent visiting historic buildings and demonstrations, a walk around the lake or a trip that combines theater, landscapes and regional history. The key consideration is which focus should shape your days and which location fits your personal plans for it.
