Discover Kendall County: Water, Nature and History
Accommodation in Kendall County
Kendall County offers a variety of travel ideas centered around water, nature, history and regional traditions. Here, you can combine active days on the Fox River with walks through diverse landscapes, historical impressions and a seasonal community festival. When choosing your vacation rental, it is therefore worth deciding on the focus of your trip early on: Would you like to go canoeing, explore nature trails, visit historic sites or combine different experiences?
Water Activities on the Fox River and at the Lakes
The Fox River Water Trail runs from the Wisconsin-Illinois border through Lake, McHenry, Kane, Kendall and LaSalle counties to the Illinois River in Ottawa, and therefore also through Kendall County. The system connects access points and signage to promote recreational paddling with canoes and kayaks. The only portage section of the Water Trail in Kendall County is located at the Yorkville Dam. This information is particularly useful for visitors who want to plan their paddling route carefully.
Silver Springs SFWA also offers a range of activities. Boating is permitted on Loon Lake and Beaver Lake, although gasoline-powered motors are not allowed. The two small lakes also offer fishing for channel catfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill and crappie. A scenic, four-mile trail follows the river and passes through wooded areas with views of the lakes.
For an action-packed day, Raging Waves offers a wave pool, a lazy river, and the Aussie Mat Dash and Wonambi attractions. Those looking for a special activity involving animals can find private and semi-private riding lessons for adults and children aged four and older at the Ellis Equestrian Center. Lessons and programs are offered seven days a week exclusively by prior appointment.
Nature Trails, Prairie and Special Habitats
Hoover Forest Preserve combines nature observation with exercise. It is home to the educational center The Rookery and Neshnabe’k, a reconstructed Pottawatomi village. The improved trail network is 5.5 miles long and leads through diverse habitats to scenic viewpoints. Nearly 300 native plant species occur in the preserve, including some that are not known anywhere else in Kendall County.
Fox River Bluffs opened in 2023 and features a small parking lot, a restored prairie and an oak reforestation project. For another nature outing, you can use the trails at Ellis House and Equestrian Center; no appointment is required and there is no usage fee.
History and Regional Culture
Lyon Farm is a historic village with 15 restored buildings. Its holdings include a 1918 Chicago Burlington & Quincy caboose. Lyon Farm is open on days when events take place. In Plano, Illinois, the Edith Farnsworth House is also located on the Fox River, about 58 miles southwest of Chicago.
The Kendall County Fair takes place every summer and celebrates the region’s agricultural traditions at a family-friendly community gathering. The program includes livestock competitions; funnel cakes are also available. Depending on the time of year, a stay can thus be supplemented with an insight into regional festival culture and agriculture.
