Henry County in Illinois offers unusual contrasts for travel planning: long stretches along the Hennepin Canal, gently rolling landscapes, Swedish-influenced history in Bishop Hill, and museums, parks, and cultural offerings in several communities. Those looking for a vacation apartment or vacation home can consciously choose the focus of their trip – between active days on the water, historical discoveries, and quieter outings with regional character.

Nature and Recreation along the Hennepin Canal

The Hennepin Canal State Trail is a 104.5-mile linear park extending across five counties in Illinois, including Henry County. Its towpath offers 155 miles of opportunities for hiking and cycling: The route runs from the Illinois River to the Rock River, supplemented by a feeder canal trail to Rock Falls. These different figures refer to the respective trail and path sections and help put the scale of the trail network into perspective.

The Hennepin Canal can also be experienced on the water. The canal is open to boating and canoeing. However, the locks are no longer in operation and must be bypassed by land. When choosing your accommodation, it may therefore be useful to consider whether you are planning your stay primarily for cycling and hiking days, your own canoe outings, or a mixture of nature and culture.

Johnson-Sauk Trail State Recreation Area lies on a glacial moraine that contributes to Henry County’s gently rolling landscape. The area covers 1,365 acres and offers cross-country skiing. This complements the canal trails with a landscape featuring different terrain and an explicitly winter activity.

Bishop Hill: Swedish History and Historic Buildings

Bishop Hill was founded in 1846 by Swedish Pietist Eric Janson (1808–1850) and his followers as a utopian religious community. Four historically significant buildings are owned by the State of Illinois and administered as part of the Bishop Hill State Historic Site. The Bishop Hill Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1984.

The Bishop Hill State Historic Site includes the Colony Church, built in 1848, a two-story wood-frame building. Another prominent address is the Steeple Building of the Bishop Hill Heritage Association. The three-story Greek Revival building with 24 rooms houses the organization’s main museum, offices, and archives. The Henry County Museum in Bishop Hill presents the county’s history through a steam engine, tools, clothing, quilts, a recreated general store, and a saddlery.

The local atmosphere also includes Swedish food at the Colony Store and an outlet for local handicrafts. The Bishop Hill State Historic Site hosts Jordbruksdagarna, a traditional harvest festival modeled on the 19th century, with demonstrations of harvesting and processing crops.

Places for Museums, Parks, and Special Outings

Kewanee places another emphasis on industrial history. At the Robert and Marcella Richards Museum, an exhibit is dedicated to the Kewanee Boiler Company. On display are several hundred photographs of the factory and its employees, as well as artifacts and memorabilia such as miniature boilers and numerous scrapbooks. At Windmont Park, a walking path with additional walking and fitness stations leads around the pond; fishing is permitted in the pond and from a pier. Chatauqua Park has a 12-hole disc golf course.

In Galva, Veterans Park combines walking paths with information panels from the History Walk. The Galva Historical Society operates a museum there in the original Wiley family home and preserves historical publications such as the GalvaLand magazine. Galva’s summer and fall events include the Levitt AMP Music Series and the Backroads Music Festival. For a sporting addition, the Valley View Club is located south of Cambridge, Illinois, in a rural setting: The 18-hole golf course has five sets of tees ranging from 3,163 to 6,393 yards.
