Cass combines varied landscapes with a remarkable wealth of history, museums, and regional festivals. Between forests, grasslands, prairie, and water, you will find opportunities for active days as well as cultural discoveries. When choosing your vacation rental or vacation home, you can therefore consider whether nature experiences, the history of the Illinois River, or seasonal events should be the focus of your trip.

Experience Forests, Prairie, and Water

The Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area showcases Cass as a landscape of contrasts: old-growth forest, agricultural land, grassland, and rare hill prairie come together here. These different habitats provide a home for a diverse range of wildlife. Active outings include 24 miles of mountain biking trails and a three-mile hiking and jogging trail. Those who want to combine exercise with nature observation can choose the route that best suits their preferred pace for the day.

The Meredosia National Wildlife Refuge also caters to visitors with a variety of interests. Activities include fishing, wildlife observation, wildlife photography, environmental and wildlife interpretation, and environmental education. Evan's Prairie has a 0.25-mile low-barrier trail. The land and water areas are open from February 1 through October 15, daily from sunrise to sunset. The Sanganois State Fish & Wildlife Area complements the nature experiences with public boat ramps for canoeing and kayaking. Nearly 90 species of native Midwestern plants grow in Rexroat Prairie.

River History and Historic Sites

Beardstown is located on the Illinois River, which has played an important role in the community's economy and history. In Beardstown, several museums tell the story of this connection. The Beardstown Historical Museum preserves historically and culturally significant objects and artifacts relating to the community, Central Illinois, and Native American heritage. At the River Museum, you can see models of riverboats as well as modern and historic equipment used for work on the Illinois River, including ice saws, fishing and hunting equipment, and boat and barge supplies.

The town is also connected to the Looking for Lincoln Heritage Trail. The Old Lincoln Courtroom & Museum is one of its attractions. The courtroom where Abraham Lincoln defended Duff Armstrong in the famous Almanac Trial is still used as a courtroom. The Looking for Lincoln exhibit stations are spread throughout Beardstown and the surrounding area; altogether, the Story Trail uses more than 200 roadside exhibit stations and statues in more than 50 communities in the Heritage Area.

For local orientation, the Beardstown River Look is worth visiting: a covered overlook is located several blocks west of downtown. However, flood-control walls prevent access to the actual river there. The Beardstown Grand Opera House is also part of the area's history. It was originally built in 1872 and rebuilt after being almost completely destroyed by a tornado. Theater and music performances were held there during the ongoing restoration.

Festivals with Their Own Character

Cass can also be experienced through its recurring events. The Cass County Fair is held every summer at the fairgrounds in Virginia. Virginia BBQ is celebrated during the first full week of June as a community-wide event featuring food, a carnival, flea markets, and entertainment. Every October, Rexroat Prairie Log Cabin Days offers demonstrations, food, and other events. On the first weekend in December, Christmas in Virginia follows with a Santa parade, food, markets, and activities for children.

A special culinary tradition is Arenzville Burgoo. The two-day festival takes place every September in support of community organizations and is organized and run by volunteers. The event has been held for more than 100 years. In Beardstown, the annual Fall Fun Festival adds music, a car and motorcycle show, a carnival, and a parade to the events calendar. In Virginia, the Cass County Historical and Genealogical Society also maintains a room with local artifacts, photographs, memorabilia, and research resources.

Choose the Right Accommodation for Your Travel Interests

When searching for accommodation, it is worthwhile to decide on your preferred travel style in advance. Those who want to focus on mountain biking trails, hiking and jogging paths, or wildlife observation can use the nature offerings as their main guide. Visitors interested in culture may prefer to focus on Beardstown, the museums, the Lincoln stations, and the river's history. Those seeking a regional atmosphere can plan their trip around one of the recurring festivals. A vacation rental or vacation home in Cass thus becomes a starting point for an itinerary that you can combine with your interests and the relevant event dates.
