Wayne County in Illinois combines nature experiences with history, local traditions and a variety of excursion destinations. Around Fairfield, you can discover museums, historic photographs, a striking mural and a golf course. Outside the city, lakes, forests, parks and seasonal experiences await. This allows you to plan your trip around whether you prefer quiet days by the water, cultural discoveries or activities with children.

Nature and Activities at Sam Dale Lake

The Sam Dale Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area offers opportunities for fishing, hunting, picnicking and camping. The landscape is gently rolling and characterized by lush forests, with Sam Dale Lake itself as an additional highlight. The lake covers 194 acres and is accompanied by five miles of shoreline trails. Those who enjoy spending time outdoors can combine different ideas for the day here without making a single activity the main focus of the trip.

At certain times of the year, bald eagles stay in the Sam Dale Lake area. To get there, take Exit 109 from I-57 and then follow Route 161 east for approximately 22 miles. Take this approximate distance into account when planning your trip. Additional nature experiences are offered by the Sam and Florence Atkinson Forest as an Illinois State Habitat Area, along with its hiking and walking trails.

Parks, Sports and Excursions with Children

Leo French Park is the largest park in Wayne County. Its facilities include baseball fields, a basketball court, picnic shelters and an Olympic-size swimming pool. This gives families various options for an active or relaxing day. A special seasonal attraction is Shreve’s Pumpkin Patch, with a pumpkin field, hayrides, a corn pit, children’s play equipment, a corn maze, fall decorations and food.

The public Fairfield Public Golf Course is also one of the region’s recreational options; it has ten holes. Lakewoods Flying Duck Sporting Clays, on the other hand, is aimed at visitors who would like to try sporting clays or wobble trap. The facility includes twelve stations and twenty automatic machines, including a wobble-trap, a battue and a rabbit setup. Paved nature trails through meadows, forests and wetlands can be used year-round.

Fairfield as a Starting Point for History and Culture

Fairfield was laid out as a town in 1819 on land donated by the Barnhill family. The Wayne County Courthouse, built in 1891, houses a permanent exhibition featuring more than forty enlarged historic photographs. The images range from the 19th century through the 1960s. The Early History Museum is located in a room connected to the Fairfield Public Library at 300 S.E. 2nd Street in Fairfield, Illinois.

The Hanna House Museum presents exhibitions on contemporary history from the 1930s to more recent events. It is open on Saturdays from April through October from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., except on holidays. Pat’s trophies for Miss Illinois and Miss Congeniality are also displayed there. The Olive Branch Schoolhouse, which was relocated to French Park in Fairfield and is now a museum, features a long-term photo exhibition commemorating selected images of students from former rural schools in Wayne County. The schoolhouse is staffed on selected occasions, especially during FCHS Homecoming weekend, as well as for elementary school field trips.

At Freedom Park on Main Street in downtown Fairfield, you can see the mural “Love Thou Thy Land” by David and Cheryl Harl. Political history is also present: the Republican Caucus of Wayne County of 1860 is considered the first caucus in the United States to nominate Lincoln for president.

Seasons, Regional Products and Choosing Accommodation

The Wayne County Agricultural Fair takes place every summer.
