Volcano combines the distinctive landscape of Kīlauea with Hawaiian art, rainforest, wine and regional experiences. Those planning a trip with different ideas for each day will find both encounters with nature and galleries, workshops, tastings and sporting opportunities here. When searching for a vacation rental or holiday home, it is worth deciding on your preferred focus early on: Should the trip mainly revolve around rainforest and culture, or should culinary enjoyment and golf also be part of the itinerary?

Rainforest and Art in Volcano Village

The Niaulani Rainforest is described as one of the last old-growth Koa and ʻŌhiʻa rainforests of Kīlauea. Niaulani is a 7.4-acre property with a 4-acre native forest ecosystem. Free walks led by the Volcano Art Center provide information about the Niaulani Rainforest in Volcano Village. They take place on Monday mornings from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. This makes it possible to combine a nature-focused activity with a fixed, manageable schedule.

At the Niaulani Sculpture Garden in Volcano Village, a loop trail leads visitors to view the sculptures. The works are made of stone, metal and wood. Another cultural destination is the Volcano Art Center, which has a gallery in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and a Niaulani campus in Volcano Village. Since 1980, the center has organized activities and workshops that introduce participants to Hawaiian culture. The main gallery in the national park is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; the office and gallery at the Niaulani campus are open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Hawaiian Art and Special Places

Volcano Garden Arts is located in a historic property dating from 1908 in Volcano Village. It presents contemporary Hawaiian art, including ceramics, masks, paintings, outdoor sculptures and wearable art jewelry. Okika Studio is situated on more than one acre in the tropical mountain rainforest of Volcano Village. The property includes glass art as well as gardens with exotic plants and orchids. These different places add several cultural highlights to your trip without requiring every day to follow the same pattern.

Volcano Village is a gateway community to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. You can also include hula performances in your itinerary: They take place on the second Saturday of each month without electronic amplification in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, at the kahua hula near the Volcano Art Center Gallery. The combination of art, music, nature and Hawaiian culture also makes Volcano appealing to families looking for shared experiences but not wanting to focus exclusively on sports.

Wine, Markets and Regional Specialties

Volcano Winery is located in Volcano, Hawaii, and invites visitors to enjoy a wine tasting. The tasting room is open daily from 12:00 to 5:30 p.m. The Ali'i Vineyard Tour includes a guided tour of the vineyard and production room, six classic wine tastings and two tastings of wines made from the estate's own tea cultivation. The Wine Maker's Tour leads through the vineyard and tea garden and includes a wine tasting, a Meli dessert pairing and tea from the estate's own cultivation.

Another culinary destination is the Sunday Farmer's Market at the Cooper Center. The market takes place weekly on Sunday mornings on Wright Rd and offers fresh local produce, freshly baked bread, homemade preserves, grass-fed beef and locally grown coffee.

Golf and Different Daily Rhythms

Volcano Golf Course is an 18-hole course at an elevation of 4,000 feet on the edge of the active volcanic crater Kīlauea. The practice facility is open to the public and can be used without a reservation. In addition to nature and cultural activities, Volcano therefore also offers an option for a sport-focused day. Those traveling with several generations or different interests can therefore consider, when choosing a vacation rental or holiday home, which experiences should take up the most space in their personal itinerary.

The Right Accommodation for Your Travel Plans

Volcano is suitable for a trip during which you want to combine different themes rather than visit just one attraction. Rainforest, sculptures, Hawaiian art, wine tastings, the Sunday market and golf represent different ways to discover the area. If you are traveling with children, alternating between nature, culture, culinary enjoyment and activity can provide variety; no single activity has to determine the entire stay. When searching for a vacation rental in Volcano or a holiday home, you can therefore first decide on your preferred mix of relaxed, cultural and active days.
