Orchidlands Estates presents itself as a rural community with an unusually untouched character. Tall ʻŌhiʻa trees rise above dense, nearly impenetrable undergrowth. Anyone looking for a vacation apartment or vacation home for their stay will find not a generic resort destination here, but an area whose landscape, settlement history, and streetscape are closely connected.

Rural landscape and distinctive settlement structure

The lots in Orchidland are generously laid out: historical development included areas ranging from a quarter of an acre to three acres. Approximately one quarter of the lots have houses. The remaining areas are considered undeveloped and are still covered by jungle. As a result, the community’s character is shaped not only by buildings, but also by vegetation and open lots.

The rural landscape also includes several plant nurseries and small agricultural operations. A specific address for interested visitors is C & T Products at 16-1683 36th Street, Keaau, Hawaii 96749; the nursery is certified for 2026. Places like these make the agricultural side of Orchidlands Estates more tangible and offer a different way of experiencing the area than purely sightseeing destinations.

Getting around an extensive road network

Orchidland has approximately 40 miles of roads. The road network includes paved sections, gravel roads, and unpaved tracks; the side roads are generally gravel roads. Orchidland Drive is one of the easier roads to use when entering the community. When choosing your accommodation, you should therefore consider which part of the community you would like to stay in and which roads are relevant to your daily plans.

The infrastructure also distinguishes Orchidland from more densely developed places. Electricity and telephone service are available, but there is no municipal water, sewer, gas, or cable network. Water comes almost exclusively from rooftop rainwater catchment systems. These conditions are an important part of the area’s character and should be considered when choosing a vacation apartment or vacation home, along with the mix of paved and unpaved roads.

History of development and community

Orchidland Estates emerged as part of the subdivision and sale of land in Puna in the late 1950s. Approval for the development was granted before Hawaii became a state. The original development included private roads, but no utility or other services. Against this background, today’s landscape can be understood as the result of the gradual development of large lots and private infrastructure.

Community events are also part of the area’s history. The Orchidland Community Association’s monthly social event in October 2017 at Hui Hoaloha on Orchidland Drive and 36th Avenue included a harvest exchange, a farmers market, and a swap meet, and was open to everyone. On December 7, 2019, the OLCA First Saturday Harvest Share and Farmers Market took place at OLCA Hui Hoaloha near the intersection of Orchidland Drive and 36th Avenue, with an informal community talk-story session.

What to consider when choosing a location

Orchidlands Estates is particularly well suited to travel plans focused on experiencing a rural setting, large lots, plant nurseries, and agricultural surroundings. For your stay, it is advisable to clarify in advance the balance you want between peace and quiet, road location, and planning your own daily activities. The planned Orchidland Neighborhood Village Center is to be located along Orchidland Drive from Highway 130 to the midpoint between 34th and 35th Avenues.

If you would like to compare additional destinations at the same navigation level, you can then view Pahoa, Honokaa, Kealakekua, Fern Forest, Eden Roc, Naalehu, Kailua Kona and Nanawale Estates.
