Walker County offers unusual contrasts for a varied trip: natural rock gardens, clear springs and waterfalls stand alongside historic sites, museums and extensive trails.

Rock Gardens, Water and Distinctive Landscapes

One notable natural attraction is Rock City Gardens. The natural rock garden covers 14 acres and has four self-guided trails. More than 400 native plant species grow in the gardens. At the Lover’s Leap overlook, views extend across seven different states. Rocktown adds opportunities for rock climbing and bouldering for beginners and experienced climbers; the rocks are generally between 30 and 40 feet high.

Water landscapes also create their own distinctive highlights. Blue Hole is a clear spring located just a short distance from a parking area on Blue Hole Road. The Lula Lake Land Trust offers opportunities for hiking, cycling on some trails and visiting a scenic waterfall. Lula Falls is 120 feet high and is located about a 30-minute walk from the entrance to the central preserve. West Chickamauga Creek flows through a significant part of Walker County and can be explored by kayak and canoe. Its starting point in Walker County is behind Lee & Gordon Mills in Chickamauga.

Historic Sites and Regional Memory

Chickamauga Battlefield is a 5,300-acre historic landmark with 50 miles of trails. Bicycles are permitted on all paved roads, while horseback riding is possible on the Red, White and Blue Trails. This allows visitors to experience the historic landscape from different perspectives of movement without equating the activities with one another.

Several buildings point to different periods of regional history. The John Ross House is the oldest surviving structure in northwest Georgia. It was built around 1797, later served as a US post office and was used as a hospital during the Civil War. Chattooga Academy is considered one of the oldest school buildings in Georgia and served as the headquarters of Confederate General Braxton Bragg from September 10 to 17, 1863. Construction of Gordon Lee Mansion began in 1840 and was completed seven years later; shortly before the Battle of Chickamauga, it was the headquarters of General Rosecrans and a hospital during the battle.

The Coke Ovens recall the industrial past: in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, coal was converted there into coke for iron and steel foundries. An Arts & Crafts Festival is also held there every September. In the historic center of Chickamauga, the Walker County Regional Heritage & Model Train Museum is located in a former railway depot. The Veterans of All Wars Museum at Lee & Gordon’s Mills contains information, artifacts and articles about all wars.

Active Days and Different Travel Interests

For travelers with a strong desire for activity, the Houston Valley OHV Area offers about 25 miles of off-road trails across approximately 2,600 acres. John’s Mountain is a 24,849-acre area in Walker County; hikers can explore the Keown Falls Trail there. The 9-mile The Pocket trail leads to High Point, the highest point on Pigeon Mountain, and includes several wildlife clearings as well as a camping area. Pocket Campground offers families campsites, along with parking for campers and RVs. Lookout Mountain Flight Park also operates a hang-gliding school year-round.

Quieter or more strongly themed activities are also possible. Marsh House offers tours from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from March through December. Choosing the Right Accommodation Location

If you choose Walker County primarily for its nature, rock gardens, springs, waterfalls and trails can form the focus of your planning. For a history-focused trip, the battlefield, historic buildings and museums take center stage. Those who want to combine several interests should compare their planned destinations with the desired location of their vacation rental before booking.
