Tarpon Springs combines maritime history, Greek culture and unique experiences by the water. Excursion boats operated by the St. Nicholas Boat Line depart from the Historic Sponge Docks on the Anclote River. On selected trips, a diver demonstrates sponge harvesting in traditional diving equipment weighing more than 170 pounds. The World Famous Sponge Docks remain an active working waterfront, as they have been since the 19th century.

Greek Tradition and Historic Places

Those who want to discover the cultural side of Tarpon Springs can use the free narrated “Walk Tarpon Springs” self-guided tour. It includes ten stops in the Greektown Historic District. This district is Florida’s first designated Traditional Cultural Property. The town’s Greek history also includes St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral: It is an example of Neo-Byzantine architecture and features sculpted Greek marble, elaborate icons and stained-glass windows.

The permanent exhibition “The Greek Community of Tarpon Springs” at the Heritage Museum explores the history and culture of the Greek community. Domestic traditions, culinary customs, religion and celebrations are among its topics. The other wing houses the permanent exhibition “The Great State of Florida,” featuring works by Christopher M. Still. This allows local community history to be combined with a broader Florida perspective.

The historic buildings also give Tarpon Springs a multifaceted character. Built in 1883, the Safford House Museum has been restored to its original Victorian splendor and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Tarpon Springs Cultural Center was built in 1915 as the city’s first city hall and is also listed there. The Cultural Center is open during community theater productions, exhibitions and special events. The Train Depot, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1909 and renovated in 2005.

Parks, Water and Trails

For walks, the route through Craig Park and along the Spring Bayou walkway is a good choice. Visitors come to Craig Park to watch manatees in Spring Bayou, where they are drawn by the temperate water. The park also has a boat launch and a dock for kayaks and canoes; Sunset Beach also has a boat launch. Sunset Beach Park offers a place to watch the sunset over the Gulf.

The A.L. Anderson Park offers further scenic impressions. Cypress trees line the waterfront path, while views extend across Salmon Bay and Lake Tarpon. The Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail runs from St. Petersburg to Tarpon Springs. Depending on your preferred travel day, you can use it to give walks, water observation and historic discoveries different emphasis in your itinerary.

Experiences for Different Interests

For families and travel groups with different preferences, Tarpon Springs offers several distinctly different activities. The Tarpon Springs Aquarium provides a hands-on experience where visitors can hold, pet and feed its animals. The Replay Museum features more than 100 fully restored, playable arcade machines. Craig Park is also the venue for the largest Epiphany celebration in North America. At one event, people eat outdoors at the Sponge Docks.

The Right Base for Your Trip

When searching for a holiday apartment in Tarpon Springs, you can first decide which character should define your trip: maritime working history and Greek tradition, historic buildings and exhibitions, or parks, water and walks.
