Pinellas combines coastal landscapes, extensive natural areas and unusual insights into history, wildlife and local cuisine. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, it is worth deciding on your preferred type of trip first: the focus could be tranquil nature experiences, cycling, days at the beach, historical impressions or culinary discoveries.

Nature Between Islands, Tampa Bay and Woodland Landscapes

A distinctive starting point for exploring the region is Fort De Soto Park. It is the largest park in the Pinellas County Park System and covers 1,136 acres on five interconnected islands. Those who appreciate waterscapes and open coastal areas will find a particularly striking picture of Pinellas here.

Located on Tampa Bay, Weedon Island Preserve is a 3,000-acre natural area. It consists primarily of marine ecosystems and also includes some upland areas. Two self-guided paddling trails provide access to the islands and waterways; the northern trail is currently closed. This restriction is important for planning your day if you would like to explore the preserve by kayak or canoe.

A different landscape awaits you at Brooker Creek Preserve in the northeast of Pinellas County. The nature preserve covers approximately 8,700 acres. Florida Botanical Gardens, by contrast, offer a carefully designed sequence of formal gardens, landscaped areas and natural habitats across 150 acres. Admission is free. They are open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., except on the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Leashed pets are welcome; the entrances are located at 12520 Ulmerton Road and 12211 Walsingham Road.

Active Days on the Pinellas Trail

The Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail is a linear multi-use trail running from St. Petersburg to Tarpon Springs. Protected green spaces make it suitable for hiking, jogging, skating and cycling. The trail is open daily from 7:00 a.m. until sunset. This makes it possible to adapt your travel plans flexibly to different interests: while some travelers may choose a longer bike ride, others can use the trail for a shorter walk or jog.

Public transportation also opens up different perspectives on the destination. The Central Avenue Trolley runs between St. Pete Pier and Grand Central Station every 20 minutes and is free of charge. The Jolley Trolley runs daily from Clearwater Beach to Tarpon Springs through several coastal communities in Pinellas County. Such services may play a role when choosing your accommodation if you do not want to plan individual excursions exclusively by car.

History, Wildlife and Local Delights

At Heritage Village, authentically furnished interiors in the historic houses provide insights into the everyday lives of early settlers and residents. The permanent exhibition in the Turner Bungalow explores the history of the Turner family. Demonstrations by the Weaver’s Guild take place at the Daniel McMullen House on the first Saturday of every month. The Plant–Sumner House is a local historic landmark in Heritage Village. These different highlights offer inspiration for a holiday in which not every day has to be spent by the water.

At Clearwater Marine Aquarium, you can take a tour through the operational Marine Animal Hospital and see the rescue work in action. At Stingray Beach, you can observe and safely touch cownose rays. Three regional beach parks on the Gulf Coast of Pinellas County also offer opportunities for picnicking and fishing. This allows you to combine eventful visits with quieter hours outdoors.

For culinary discoveries, there are Tarpon Springs Distillery and the Dunedin Food Tour. The distillery offers tours and tastings of handcrafted spirits in a renovated historic sponge warehouse that formerly housed the Stephen Katzaras Sponge Company. The Dunedin Food Tour is a guided culinary walk with tastings at five to six independent restaurants and craft breweries.
