North Bay Village – Art, Water and Island History
Accommodation in North Bay Village
North Bay Village is located between Miami and Miami Beach, right in the middle of Biscayne Bay. Its waterfront setting, public art, and unusual island history give the area a distinctive character. Those looking for accommodation for a varied stay can combine nature experiences, creative discoveries, and historical stories here.
Water, Islands, and Parks
North Bay Village has around 4.75 miles of private and public waterfront property. Nearby Pelican Island is a 10-acre public island with covered picnic shelters, barbecue grills, picnic tables, and a sand volleyball court. At the same time, Pelican Island is a bird sanctuary and nature preserve. Brown pelicans, cormorants, and other marine animals such as dolphins and manatees can be found there. This combination appeals to visitors who want to experience not only the city but also the region’s maritime and natural side during their stay.
For families with children, three different park locations also provide useful reference points: Dr. Paul Vogel Community Park is located at 7920 West Drive, and Philip Schonberger Memorial Playground is at 1841 Galleon Street. Ansin Family Park at 1640 North Treasure Drive is a newly developed multipurpose green space for relaxing, playing, and community gatherings. Dr. Paul Vogel Community Park is open to the public daily from sunrise to 9:00 p.m., except during special events and unforeseen emergencies. Take these exact hours into account when planning your day.
Public Art
North Bay Village can also be explored through its works of art. The Vogel Park Frame Sculpture was created by Florida artist Jeff Whipple. Curved steel arches and delicate metalwork frame the view of Biscayne Bay; visitors are invited to step inside the sculpture and pose for photos in front of the bay. In Vogel Park, the North Bay Native Species Mural depicts native marine and pollinator species.
Other works add their own distinctive touches. The Island Walk Mural at Benihana combines the look of “Heart of the Bay” with the Benihana brand and uses cherry blossom motifs. The “Heart of the Bay” welcome mural is located on the Grove by the Bay building along the Kennedy Causeway. Next to Civic Park stands a brightly painted Florida Power & Light utility box designed by the artist duo “We Are Nice ‘N Easy.” On Harbor Island, local artist German Dubois created environmentally themed artworks on the Village’s traffic islands.
Stories from North Bay Village
The area’s past also offers special points of connection. Treasure Island owes its name to Robert Louis Stevenson’s literary creation. Broadcast Key, also known as Cameo Island, was the location in what is now North Bay Village from which radio station WIOD (610 AM) began broadcasting in 1926. In the 1950s, North Bay Village’s popular restaurants and nightclubs attracted prominent guests such as Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland. In the late 1960s, Dean Martin opened his own nightclub, Dino’s.
Island Walk South Plaza was completed in 2019 and is located between the East 79th Street Bridge and the Grandview Palace Condominium. These local points of reference can help you take different interests into account when choosing your vacation rental: Would you mainly like to discover art and history, are parks and the water your priority, or should both be part of a varied stay? Choose your accommodation based on the type of trip you are planning in North Bay Village, and use the locations mentioned as concrete reference points for your further considerations.
