Miami combines expansive parks, museums, Afro-Caribbean culture, and waterfront experiences with unusual insights into the history of South Florida. When choosing a vacation rental, it is therefore worth first determining the focus of your trip: Should your stay be shaped primarily by culture and exhibitions, or should walks, beaches, cycling routes, and activities for children be part of it as well?

Culture between History, Art, and Afro-Caribbean Influences

One notable cultural destination is the Little Haiti Cultural Complex. Visitors gain insights into Afro-Caribbean culture there; at the same time, the complex’s purpose is to present and preserve Afro-Caribbean cultures. At the Caribbean Marketplace, also known as „Mache Ayisyen“, authentic Haitian artwork and handicrafts are sold. The market was designed by architect Charles Pawley as a modern replica of the Iron Market in Port-au-Prince.

The museums also focus on different subjects. The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is located in the northern part of Coconut Grove in the city of Miami and overlooks Biscayne Bay. It is James Deering’s winter estate from 1916. At the historic Vizcaya Village, a 30-minute tour is offered during the weekly Farmers Market. The permanent exhibition „Tropical Dreams: A People’s History of South Florida“ at the HistoryMiami Museum covers 10,000 years of South Florida history. The museum is also a Smithsonian Affiliate in downtown Miami.

The Pérez Art Museum Miami adds art to these historical perspectives. Its collection comprises almost 3,000 works of art, a selection of which is on display in eight galleries. This allows you to vary your travel plans between architecture, regional history, and art without reducing Miami to a single vacation theme.

Parks, Walks, and Beaches on Virginia Key

Miami’s municipal parks and recreation system includes more than 150 parks covering a total area of over 1,400 acres. For a shorter walk, Simpson Park is a good option: it has a free, publicly accessible path about half a mile long made of crushed shells and running through a hardwood grove. The approximate length is a useful reference point for planning your day.

Virginia Key has mountain biking trails and also offers beaches. The facts about the parks, trails, and beaches describe different experiences; you can decide which of them you would like to combine according to your own plans for the day.

Science, Family Experiences, and Local Atmosphere

Frost Science offers several unusual ways to engage with the natural sciences. The three-story aquarium presents South Florida’s significant aquatic ecosystems from the surface to the depths. At the Frost Planetarium, you can expect a large domed screen, an 8K projection with 16 million colors, surround sound, and 250 seats for visual journeys into space.

Those traveling with children will find hands-on activities, immersive learning experiences, and inclusive environments for visitors of all ages and with different abilities at the Miami Children’s Museum. Another special atmosphere can be found at Viernes Culturales, the „Cultural Fridays“. This free community event has taken place on the third Friday of every month since 2000. From noon until evening, Calle Ocho between 14th and 17th Avenue is closed to pedestrians; food, art, and music are offered outdoors.

The Right Accommodation for Your Travel Plans

When looking for a vacation rental in Miami, you can use the experiences that matter most for your trip as a guide. Those interested in culture may choose their other destinations based on museums, history, and art, while others may prefer days in the park, on Virginia Key, or at science exhibitions.
