Discover Plant City: History, Strawberries, and Water Experiences
Accommodation in Plant City
Plant City combines railroad history, strawberry culture, downtown experiences, and excursions on the water. Those planning a trip with diverse interests will find opportunities here to enjoy culture, regional specialties, and active days. When choosing a vacation rental, you can therefore first consider whether your trip should focus more on historic sites, events, culinary discoveries, or nature experiences.
History and Local Character
A distinctive starting point for exploring the city’s history is the Plant City Union Depot. The building was constructed in 1909 and remained in operation until 1971. Railroad enthusiasts can complement this historical focus with the Robert W. Willaford Railroad Museum. It displays a fully restored 1963 Seaboard Air Line caboose and a 1942 Whitcomb locomotive.
The Florida Strawberry Festival also tells the story of the area’s development. The Plant City Lions Club founded the festival in 1930 to celebrate the local harvest and the community. Today, it is a tradition that brings people from Plant City and the surrounding region together. The festival also includes a permanent exhibition covering nearly 2,500 square feet and dedicated to the event’s history and culture. It comprises five themed areas.
You can find additional historical connections at Plant City High School at 605 North Collins Street. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 4, 1981. The Downtown Plant City Commercial District, covering approximately 25 acres, forms the city’s commercial core. At McCall Park, a historic five-acre gathering place in downtown, shade trees, brick walkways, and numerous seating areas shape the scene.
Water, Nature, and Special Experiences
For a change from culture to nature, Edward Medard Conservation Park is an excellent choice. Its 700-acre reservoir is used for canoeing, boating, and fishing. Canoes and kayaks can be rented on site at the entrance station. This allows you to add a specific water experience to your stay without giving up the cultural focus of your trip.
McCall Park stretches across four city blocks through the walkable downtown area of Plant City. A food truck market takes place there on the last Friday of every month. The “Last Friday in Downtown” event series offers themed evenings with entertainment, arts and crafts, games, and local shopping for families. The annual Oktoberfest complements the events calendar with Bavarian flair, live music, and cultural celebrations.
Strawberries, Markets, and Discoveries
The strawberry tradition is evident beyond the festival. At Parkesdale Market, you can enjoy strawberry shortcake and strawberry milkshakes. Locally grown strawberries, jams, preserves, and citrus baskets are also offered there. Parkesdale Farm Market opened in February 1969, making it part of Plant City’s documented market history as well.
An unusual activity awaits you at Aunt Cera's Fossil Dig in Dinosaur World. Guests can sift through soil and discover fossils of marine animals such as shark teeth, Mosasaurus teeth, ammonites, and crinoids. This experience adds a distinct accent alongside railroads, strawberries, and water activities.
Which Accommodation Suits Your Trip?
If museums, historic buildings, and downtown events are the main focus, you can plan your days around cultural activities. Those who want to include the 700-acre reservoir, canoeing, or fishing can choose a different focus. This allows you to select a vacation apartment or vacation home in Plant City to suit your personal mix of history, regional food, events, and nature experiences.
