Odessa is especially rewarding to explore through nature experiences: forests, wetlands, lakes and trails offer different options for planning your days. You can also discover local art, history and agricultural products. You can tailor your stay to whether you prefer hiking, horseback riding, spending time by the water or combining different interests.

Nature Preserves with Varied Landscapes

At Lake Dan Nature Preserve, a hike of about 2.5 miles leads to Lake Dan and back. Lake Frances Nature Preserve offers a different landscape: its 1,673 acres include wet pine flatwoods, wet prairie and cypress swamps. Lake Frances Preserve is physically connected to Lake Dan Preserve; together, the two nature preserves cover more than 2,800 acres. If you’re interested in natural areas, you can explore both a specific out-and-back hike and a large, connected nature preserve.

The trails at Northwest Equestrian Conservation Park also pass through varied landscapes: cypress and hardwood swamps, freshwater marshes and oak hammocks. The six-mile trail is used by both horseback riders and hikers, and is popular with both groups. For a hike with a stated round-trip distance, Lake Dan Preserve offers an approximate 2.5-mile out-and-back route. These provide different points of reference for planning; they are not necessarily comparable types of trails or day itineraries.

On Foot, on Horseback or by the Water

Lake Frances Preserve also has a 6.4-mile equestrian trail. Seasonal flooding can restrict access to this trail. If you’re planning a horseback ride, take this seasonal factor into account. The trail at Northwest Equestrian Conservation Park combines use by hikers and horseback riders with the swamp and forest landscapes described above.

At Lake Rogers Park, trails wind through oak and pine forests and are popular with hikers and joggers. Two freshwater lakes are used for fishing and kayaking. One of them, Lake Rogers, is one of the largest lakes in Hillsborough County. The park brings forest trails and water activities together. When deciding how to spend the day, you can choose whether to focus on a walk or run, fishing or a kayak trip.

Other nature highlights round out the selection: Brooker Creek Headwaters Nature Preserve protects wetlands that serve as the headwaters of the Brooker Creek system. Church Lake Farms is on the shore of Church Lake and has shaded areas and picnic tables. The Anclote Tract of Starkey Wilderness Preserve is at the intersection of State Road 54 and Gunn Highway in Odessa. The Anclote River Ranch Tract can be reached by hiking trails in Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park.

Trails and Practical Information

The Upper Tampa Bay Trail runs alongside Peterson Road Park. A 4.35-mile section of the trail passes through District land in Odessa. This section includes a trailhead with parking, restrooms and a covered picnic area; these facilities may change over time. It’s a good idea to check the latest trail conditions and facilities before planning your outing.

The Suncoast Trail trailhead at the end of Touchpoint Drive, north of SR 54, has been closed since June 23, 2026. The closure is expected to continue until the project is completed in summer 2027. If you plan to use this particular trail entrance, check its current status before setting out.

Art, History and Farm Products

The Starkey Ranch Theatre Library Cultural Center hosts art exhibitions featuring works by local artists. The exhibition program may change. This offers another cultural highlight for anyone who wants to include art in their trip alongside trails and landscapes.

The origin of the town’s name offers another point of interest: Odessa was apparently named in the 1880s by Peter A. Demens, a Russian immigrant who played a major role in financing the Orange Belt Railway. The railway ran from Sanford via Trilby to St. Petersburg. The story links the town’s name to a specific person and a railway route across Florida.

At Raprager Farms, the market offers plants, flowers, pumpkins, specialty items and a changing selection of products from the farm and selected producers. Market days and offerings vary, so check the current market days if you’d like to visit. Alongside the art and nature attractions, this makes it possible to plan a trip that isn’t limited to hiking.

Choose a Vacation Rental to Suit Your Ideal Mix of Activities

When looking for a vacation rental, it helps to first decide what you’d like to focus on: forests and wetlands, hiking, horseback riding, activities on the lakes or a combination that includes art and a market visit. The places mentioned offer different options for planning; choose a location for your accommodation that suits the experiences you actually want to include. If you’re traveling with family, you can also decide together which of these interests you’d like your stay to revolve around, rather than filling every day with a different type of outing.
