Highlands County: Scenery, Nature and Unique Experiences
Accommodation in Highlands County
Highlands County combines exceptional nature experiences with lakes, regional history, museums and unique activities. Those planning a trip with children or looking to combine different interests within the family will find several distinct focal points here: wildlife observation, water activities, culture and motorsports. When choosing a vacation rental or vacation home, the most important consideration is therefore which of these experiences should shape your trip.
Nature and Water as Defining Experiences
Highlands Hammock State Park is an important destination for nature enthusiasts. It is home to more rare and endemic species than any other state park in Florida. The park’s Civilian Conservation Corps Museum also provides insight into the Great Depression and the young men who built Florida’s eight CCC parks. Nature and history can therefore be combined in a single visit here.
Archbold Biological Station offers scheduled tours and lectures as well as self-guided nature trails. At the Frances Archbold Hufty Learning Center, you can expect exhibitions and information about natural history. School visits typically include a guided nature tour, wildlife observation or tracking, a live snake demonstration and a visit to the weather station. These different formats give you the opportunity to experience the natural environment according to your interests and daily schedule.
Lake Istokpoga also has a clear focus. The lake covers 27,692 acres and offers good fishing for largemouth bass as well as one of the highest catch rates for bass in the state. Public boat ramps are located on its northern, northeastern and southwestern shores. At the boat ramp area on Cow House Road, anglers can also wade into the water to fish.
Culture, Family Activities and Local History
In the historic downtown of Lake Placid, there are nearly 50 murals that can be explored by car or on foot. The Lake Placid Mural Gallery is located in the Chamber Building at 18 Oak Avenue and shows a nine-minute film about the Mural Society. The Lake Placid Historical Society Depot Museum uses the original railway depot and exhibitions to preserve the town’s stories, artifacts and traditions.
For travelers with children, the Children’s Museum of the Highlands offers children ages 1 to 12 hands-on learning through interactive exhibits and ongoing programs. The Museum of Florida Art and Culture opened in 2001 as a showcase for Florida’s art, history and culture. This creates concrete opportunities for discovery for different age groups, even on days without an extended stay in nature.
Sebring Between Motorsports and Scenery
The Sebring International Raceway was established on a former World War II military airfield and is the oldest continuously operating road racing circuit in North America. Races, private track rentals and test drives take place there; the Skip Barber Racing School is also located there. The raceway also hosts an annual 12- or 24-hour bicycle race, during which participants ride both on and alongside the track.
The landscape around Sebring is characterized by gently rolling hills, orange groves and charming small towns. The Sun ‘N Lake Preserve is a 1,350-acre wildlife preserve in Sebring; its trail is suitable for hiking and cycling. In summer, the Caladium Festival adds to the region’s range of experiences. It is a summer tradition in the Sebring area and offers a guided bus tour through caladium fields led by a caladium grower.
Choose the Right Regional Focus
Highlands County can be chosen according to different vacation preferences: Lake Istokpoga stands for fishing and boat ramps, the state parks and Archbold Biological Station for nature knowledge and observation, Lake Placid for murals and local history, and Sebring for motorsports, scenery and cycling opportunities. A six-mile paved route runs from north to south and connects downtown Sebring with South Florida State College in Avon Park.
When looking for accommodation, first determine your preferred focus and then compare the regional options. Highlands County offers more than one perspective for a trip: families can combine interactive museums and nature experiences, while anglers, cyclists, culture enthusiasts and motorsports fans can each find their own points of interest.
