Okaloosa County invites exploration with its emerald-green waters and soft, sugar-white sand beaches. You’ll also find nature trails, protected waterways and places with a layered history. If you’re looking for a vacation rental, you can start by considering which experiences you want to shape your stay: time by the water, exploring dunes and scrubland, or cultural discoveries.

Waterways and Trails Through Nature

Choctawhatchee Bay is 27 miles long, covers 129 square miles and stretches across Okaloosa and Walton counties. Free boat ramps in Okaloosa County provide access to freshwater rivers, the Gulf of Mexico, Santa Rosa Sound and the bay. Since conditions at individual ramps can change, it’s a good idea to check before visiting.

At Henderson Beach State Park, striking dunes meet the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico: the white sand dunes are 30 feet high. A 0.75-mile hiking trail winds through dunes and scrubland. If you’re also interested in smaller details of nature, Rocky Bayou Aquatic Preserve offers a different perspective on the landscape. Rocky Bayou is a freshwater-to-brackish water system with numerous fish and shellfish species, including the Okaloosa darter, which is federally listed as endangered.

Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park combines nature with an unusual historical background. During World War II, the site was used as a shooting and bombing range and was later transformed into a natural landscape. Hiking is among the activities offered there. At the Turkey Creek Nature Trail in Niceville, a one-mile boardwalk runs alongside another natural attraction; the trail offers opportunities for wildlife viewing.

Cultural History and Things to Discover

The Heritage Park and Cultural Center complex includes the Fort Walton Temple Mound. Three historic buildings also give a visit a distinctive focus: the Camp Walton Schoolhouse Museum, the Garnier Post Office Museum and the Civil War Exhibit Building. These three buildings are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; last entry is 15 minutes before closing. Check visitor information before you arrive.

The Air Force Armament Museum is dedicated to collecting, preserving and exhibiting artifacts and memorabilia related to U.S. Air Force armament and its delivery systems. Admission is free; here, too, it’s a good idea to check visitor information before your visit. Volunteer-led tours are available on request for groups of five or more. Requests must be made at least one week in advance.

The history of John Beasley Park is closely tied to the era of segregation: at the time, it was the only beach for Black people. The park opened in 1960 and provides beach access via a boardwalk. This historical perspective adds an important part of local history to the area’s natural and cultural sites.

Active Hours and Local Traditions

For a playful activity, Goofy Golf in Fort Walton Beach has two 18-hole miniature golf courses. The focus at Okaloosa Island Fishing Pier, on the other hand, is fishing: the pier extends more than a quarter mile and offers a fishing platform over the Gulf of Mexico. These different activities can help you plan your vacation days around your preferred pace and interests.

The Okaloosa County Geocache Trail also leads to several public parks. To complete the trail, you must find and log at least 20 geocaches, including four in each quadrant. Since the county may change the requirements, check the current rules before setting out. In Niceville, the annual Boggy Bayou Mullet Festival has celebrated the city’s fishing tradition for over 40 years, on the third weekend in October; check the dates and program if you’re planning your stay around it.

Whether you’re most interested in nature trails, waterways, cultural history or local traditions, these destinations offer different reasons to get to know Okaloosa. Shape your vacation rental search around the experiences that interest you most, and choose a location that suits the kind of stay you want.
