Rio Blanco County combines rugged high-desert terrain, historic places and diverse opportunities for days spent in nature. The Piceance-East Douglas Herd Management Area is characterized by rolling hills, pinyon-juniper forests, sagebrush communities and open high-desert terrain. There are also landscapes such as the Oak Ridge SWA, with sagebrush, oak scrub, aspen, and pine and juniper on the slopes. Those looking for a holiday rental as a base for varied vacation days will find an appealing mix here of culture, water, wilderness and outdoor activities.

Landscapes Between the White River and Flat Tops

Nature reveals itself in many different facets in Rio Blanco County. The Piceance SWA is home to deer, grouse, mountain lions, elk and cottontail rabbits, among others. Near Meeker lies the Flat Tops Wilderness Area, with 230,830 acres of landscapes, wildlife, lakes, rivers, trails and campgrounds. More than 160 miles of trails are designated there for hiking, camping, horseback riding, hunting and fishing.

The White River also shapes the experiences in the region. It is a trout fishery with brown trout, rainbow trout, brook trout and cutthroat trout. The river is accessible at Town Park in Meeker, where you can walk along the river trail. This distinction can be important when choosing your accommodation: a central location in Meeker suits a stay focused on local history and the river, while the wide-open landscapes surrounding it make other day plans possible.

Rock Art, Museums and History

The Canyon Pintado National Historic District encompasses more than 16,000 acres of public land along 15 miles of State Highway 139. Ancient Native American rock art makes it a notable cultural and historical feature of the county. In Meeker, the 1906 Yellow Creek Schoolhouse also commemorates rural schools in Rio Blanco County during the first half of the 20th century. The Meeker Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2019 and encompasses all or parts of eleven blocks in the historic town center.

The White River Museum at 565 Park Street presents the history and treasures of the White River Valley in roughly hewn log cabins. It is located behind the red flagstone Rio Blanco County Courthouse, one block from downtown Meeker. The museum is open daily year-round: from mid-April through the end of November from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and in winter from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In Rangely, the Rangely Outdoor Museum is dedicated to the history, archaeology, zoology and ethnology of the town and surrounding region. Its topics include Indigenous peoples and prehistory, pioneers and ranching, as well as the development of energy resources. Fossils, dinosaur bones, old drilling rigs and other artifacts from the coal and oil industries add to this insight.

The regional museum landscape also includes distinctive individual exhibits: The Rangely Auto Museum displays, among other things, a Pierce motorcycle manufactured between 1909 and 1912. In Meeker stands St. James Episcopal Church, built in 1890 and considered the town’s first church. An unusual venue is The TANK, a 60-foot-high water tank converted into a recording studio and concert venue, available to the public and visiting artists.

Active Vacation Days and Different Bases

At Kenney Reservoir, opportunities on calm water include water skiing, diving, swimming, boating, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. A marina, campgrounds and wildlife-viewing areas add to the offerings. For motorized adventures, Rangely Rock Crawling Park is designated for the purpose: it is considered Colorado’s only designated natural park for rock crawling and encompasses more than 560 acres of natural terrain designated by the Bureau of Land Management as an all-terrain vehicle park. The Cedar Ridges Golf Course in Rangely is a public 9-hole course with a par of 36.

The cold season also offers clearly distinct experiences. During the winter months, the Flat Tops Trail Scenic Byway is accessible from the Lost Creek Trailhead to snowmobiles and cross-country skiers via groomed trails and snow-covered areas. Beyond Lost Creek, the route is not maintained and can only be reached on snow. The 2.2-mile Marvine Snow Trail leads to a warming hut maintained by local residents. When searching for a suitable holiday rental, you can therefore first decide whether museums and local history in Meeker or outdoor activities, vehicles and regional collections in Rangely should be the focus.

The Meeker Classic Sheepdog Championship Trials are also a distinctive part of the region’s tradition: From September 9 to 13, 2026, 135 dog-and-handler teams competed over five days in the sheepdog competition. The Range Call Festival in Meeker has been held since 1938 to celebrate the Western heritage and includes a parade, rodeos, fireworks, food, music and dancing. Other destinations you can discover include Arapahoe, Broomfield, Pueblo, Kiowa, Teller County and Montezuma County.
