Kiowa: Discover Prairie, Nature and History
Accommodation in Kiowa
Kiowa combines the landscape of rolling shortgrass prairie with waterways, natural areas and a diverse regional history. Particularly striking is the combination of experiencing nature and commemorative culture: The Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site includes the Monument Hill area with a viewpoint above Big Sandy Creek and the Repatriation Area. For your travel planning, it is worth deciding early whether your focus should be on landscapes, birdwatching, history or several of these topics.
Nature among ponds, reservoirs and prairie
The Queens State Wildlife Area in Kiowa County offers various options for planning your trip. Hunting, fishing and camping are possible there; guided tours are also offered. Jackson’s Pond is an eight-acre pond and forms the center of the Kiowa Creek Natural Area. On its shore there is a picnic shelter, tables and restrooms. This makes it possible to include time at this body of water in your travel plans.
The Great Plains Reservoirs south of Eads are naturally formed bodies of water in depressions within rolling shortgrass prairie. They are part of the Queens State Wildlife Area and offer opportunities for birdwatching and boating; fishing is also possible in some areas. Those who want to observe or photograph birds can also plan to visit the Snow Goose Trail section of the Colorado Birding Trail. Year-round opportunities for these activities are available there in Kiowa County.
Visiting Sand Creek with special preparation
The Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site requires different travel planning from the nature attractions mentioned above. Access involves at least eight miles of unpaved roads. There is currently no public transportation between the memorial site and the surrounding communities. If you include this place in your trip, you should therefore consider access and mobility issues when choosing your holiday apartment and planning your days.
The visitor center at the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site offers educational and orientation materials as well as a sales area for educational and informational items. It therefore complements a visit to Monument Hill by providing an opportunity to learn more about the subject on site.
History in Eads and Kiowa County
Eads is the county seat of Kiowa County and is located at the intersection of Colorado Highway 96 and U.S. Highway 287 along the Ports to Plains Corridor. The Kiowa County Museum features exhibits on the county’s schools, the Towner bus tragedy, the Sand Creek Massacre, early cinemas, banks, agriculture, ranching, local businesses, churches, military veterans and life on farms during the early prairie era. It is open Tuesday to Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Further historical points of interest include Eads Community Church, in the Jacobean Revival style, and the Eads School Gymnasium from 1929. The church is considered the oldest, largest and best-preserved religious building in Kiowa County. The gymnasium is significant at the local level for entertainment and recreation, education and social history. In Sheridan Lake, Sheridan Lake School commemorates the educational and social history of the region; it operated from 1929 to 1962.
Smaller buildings also tell stories of the past. Jackson Barn is a well-preserved example of a three-part horse barn built in balloon-frame construction in the early 20th century, approximately from 1915 to 1920. Haswell Jail was built in 1921 as a small concrete building with a footprint of 14 by 16 feet and remains a visible local landmark. Haswell Hotel, also known as Holly Hotel, was built by Acquilla Hollingsworth in 1907 and operated as an inn for around sixty years.
Active travel ideas and unusual discoveries
For bicycle travelers, the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail runs through Kiowa County along State Highway 96; there it is known as the Prairie Horizons Trail. An unusual attraction is located five miles south of Haswell on County Road 20: The Deep Space Exploration Society has a 60-foot parabolic antenna there that can receive radio signals from celestial objects or spacecraft across a broad frequency range.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Kiowa, you can therefore first determine your most important travel theme. Nature and water experiences lead to the reservoirs, the Queens State Wildlife Area and Jackson’s Pond. For cultural and regional history, the museum, historic buildings and communities in Kiowa County offer numerous specific points of interest. Those who want to combine both sides should include access to the memorial site and the museum’s opening hours in their personal travel plans.
