History and Culture in Gila Bend

Gila Bend is home to the Gatlin Site, a National Historic Landmark. The Gila Bend Site is designated as a Museum and Cultural Site and offers historical and interpretive exhibits, parking for cars, and a restroom. In addition, the Gila Bend Museum houses more than 2,000 artifacts relating to the history and culture of Gila Bend and the surrounding region. The exhibition presents the history of the Great Bend of the Gila River—from the Papago, now known as the Tohono O'odham, through the mining and ranching communities to modern life in Gila Bend.

Historic transportation routes are also visible in the townscape. These include sections of the 1879 Wagon Road as well as parts of the unpaved road from the 1920s that ran from Yuma to Phoenix. Those interested in the history of the Anza Expedition can also visit five areas that were former Juan Bautista de Anza campsites; two of them are located in Gila Bend. Nearby are the historic campsites Camp #27 San Simón y Judas de Uparsoytac and Camp #28 at the Village of Opas. The expedition rested there on November 10 and 11, 1775, at an Indigenous settlement.

Another memorial site is Gila Bend 9/11 Memorial Park. It contains a 4,000-pound fragment of a steel beam from the attacks of September 11, 2001. Every year, the City of Gila Bend holds a September 11 memorial ceremony in the park.

Petroglyphs, Trails, and Desert Landscape

The Painted Rock Petroglyph Site is located in the wider region surrounding Gila Bend. Hundreds of figures and patterns carved into rocks can be seen there, created centuries ago by Indigenous peoples. A short interpretive trail with information panels leads around the petroglyph site. Hiking, birdwatching, and stargazing are also possible at the Painted Rock Petroglyph Site.

The surrounding region offers additional options for longer excursions. The North Maricopa Mountains Wilderness Area lies about 12 miles east of the city and offers opportunities for hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, camping, wildlife viewing, and photography. From Gila Bend, a 12-mile section of the Anza Recreation Trail can be reached via Highway 238; it is used for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.

State Route 238 between Maricopa and Gila Bend provides access to the north-central part of the Sonoran Desert National Monument. A nine-mile route leads through the heart of the national monument. The Brittlebush Trail is a six-mile one-way trail through the Sonoran Desert landscape. These different routes give you the opportunity to choose whether to focus your trip on historical discoveries, physical activity, or observing nature, without trying to fit every experience into a single day's itinerary.
