Piopolis: History, Trails and Lac Mégantic
Accommodation in Piopolis
Piopolis offers different ways to explore its history and landscape: a stop showcasing the community’s heritage, trails through forests and wetlands, and experiences on Lac Mégantic. This lets you choose your own focus for your stay—from culture and outdoor activities to the water and local food.
History at the Halte des Zouaves
The Halte des Zouaves is a tourist stop on the Route des Sommets and showcases Piopolis’s historical heritage. It commemorates the Papal Zouaves who settled in the region in 1871 to establish the parish of Saint-Zénon-de-Piopolis. The stop is also the starting point for the Sentiers du Clocher.
Music is also part of the cultural offering: the Festival Saint-Zénon de Piopolis presents concerts in the century-old church in the picturesque village of Piopolis. For anyone interested in the town’s history and cultural life, this offers another possible focus for a stay, alongside the trails.
A local loop and a longer route
Piopolis’s historic and heritage trail is about 12 km long and can be travelled by bicycle or car. Along the loop, you can see 23 “Maisons nomades.” A wooden sign on the façade identifies each house. The approximate length and suggested modes of transport give you a practical guide for planning your day, without specifying a particular duration.
The Route des Sommets covers a much larger area: it stretches for almost 193 km through the landscapes of southern Quebec and lies at the heart of the first International Dark Sky Reserve. You can explore it by car, motorcycle, bicycle or on foot. If you’re considering a longer route rather than a single local loop, it offers several ways to get around. The Halte des Zouaves is also one of the tourist stops along this route.
Forest trails, shores and viewpoints
The Sentiers de Piopolis trail network is 7.5 km long in total during the summer. The trails pass through forests, follow the shores of Lac Mégantic and cross wetlands. The landscapes described therefore include wooded sections as well as shores and wetlands. When choosing your activities, you can consider which of these settings interests you most.
Near the village, the Sentiers du Clocher offer varied trails for peaceful walks as well as somewhat more active outings; they are easy to access. The Sentier du Scotch Cap leads to a remarkable viewpoint overlooking the lake and surrounding mountains. If reaching a viewpoint is important to you, this trail is a distinct option alongside the different sections of the trail network. No trail length or walking time is specified.
Water and seasonal cuisine
The Piopolis marina has a boat launch. The municipal beach is open to everyone. The Piopolis campground is in Piopolis Bay, right on the shore of Lac Mégantic.
At the Magasin Général de Piopolis, you can sample homemade food, including the famous “Gino Chouinard” sugar pie, depending on the season. The seasonal note is important for planning: offerings may vary throughout the year. Together with the historic sites, trails and waterfront locations, this gives you a range of themes to shape your stay in Piopolis around.
