Lac-Mégantic: Culture, River and City History

Lac-Mégantic brings together cultural sites, the Chaudière River and experiences that range from the city centre to outdoor activities. Cultural History at the Train Station and in the Centre

At the heart of Lac-Mégantic stands the Église de Sainte-Agnès, a building designated as a heritage site. The Gare patrimoniale de Lac-Mégantic is also in the heart of the city and is significant both architecturally and in terms of cultural history. Both places provide tangible points of reference for the historic character of the centre.

At the train station, the exhibition “Clovis: Caribou-Hunting People” presents findings from excavations at the Cliche-Rancourt site. The excavations took place from 2003 to 2012 in the Mégantic region of Québec. The exhibition’s subject thus connects this particular site with the wider cultural history of the region.

A Sculpture Walk

Le Marcheur d'étoiles is a historic and cultural walking tour through the centre of Lac-Mégantic. It features 15 points of interest in the heart of the city and includes 48 monumental sculptures. The number of stops and the sculptures give the walk two distinctive features: it combines cultural orientation with a striking artistic component.

River Landscapes and Outdoor Activities

The Chaudière River, its banks and the wetlands in Parc de la Rivière Chaudière have a unique status because they are in exceptionally good condition. This landscape offers a distinct counterpoint to the cultural sites and walks in the centre, and appeals to travellers who want to include the river and wetlands in their vacation plans.

Lac-Mégantic also has a cycling trail that is partly paved and partly surfaced with compacted stone dust. The changing surfaces are a practical consideration when planning a ride. Since trail surfaces can change over time, check current conditions before setting out.

In late spring, the section of the Chaudière River starting at the Centre sportif Lac-Mégantic can offer Class 3 rapids when water flow is suitable. This kayaking section is suitable for experienced kayakers only. The season, water flow and level of experience all matter here: don’t treat the trip as just another addition to your stay; take all three conditions into account.
